LOL COXHILL + PAT THOMAS "ONE NIGHT IN GLASGOW" (SCATTER, 1994)

A consummate musician with no stylistic boundaries. I've discovered him on the "Dunois Solos" which was also my first exposure to improvised solo musics.
He is in a line along soprano saxophone players as Sidney Bechet, Steve Lacy or Evan Parker.
Thank you Mr. Coxhill for your music and your impish humour.

An anecdote: "...used record dealer here told...that he met Lol on the
street one day when he was in the city for a jazz festival. Said hi and
invited him for a drink in a nearby cafe. Lol was happy to oblige and
sat for a chat. After a while, he took out his sax and a piece of paper.
He folded the paper in half, printed Lol Coxhill on it, put it on the
table in front of him. Then he played a tune. On finishing, he put his
sax and the piece of paper back in his case".

Steve Miller Trio feat. Lol Coxhill - Miller's Tale

Steve Miller Trio feat. Lol Coxhill - Miller's Tale
Matchless Recordings MR9 1986

I'm sure that followers of this blog cannot have failed to register the passing away of Lol Coxhill last week. Regular followers would also know that we have posted Coxhill many times in the past. So, to commemorate his passing, here is a live set from 1985 with the Steve Miller Trio. Miller and Coxhill have collaborated in the past, most notably on two lps out on the Virgin subsidiary Caroline from 1973 and 1974, respectively. These have been compiled on a double cd on the Cuneiform label, with lots of extra material from what I read. Might be well worth picking up for those who did not get the original albums. Miller and Coxhill were part of the whole Canterbury prog jazz rock scene which spawned a bunch of outfits, among others Delivery, with which both were associated, and Kevin Ayers and the Whole World which made a memorable album called "Shooting at the Moon", featuring Coxhill. Happily, some BBC sessions have recently trickled out on cd and those with long memories may recall we posted a set from Holland a while back.

While the earlier collaborations were fragmented and ad-hoc-ish, this set here is one contiguous performance spread over four sides where Miller and Coxhill are joined by Tony Moore on bass and Eddie Prevost, of AMM provenance, on drums. The Matchless label is very much alive as an outlet for AMM projects and other specimens of British improv.

An intensely concentrated set, this one, freely improvised, no steady rhythmic backbone to discern here, Coxhill floating and gliding over the piano-led trio. Not as obviously whimsical as other Coxhill projects, but somewhat chamber-like with the type of close listening among the players one associates with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and similar British improv combos. Not the stuff to grab you by the throat, but to gradually insinuate itself with you. A pleasant listening experience, whose rewards are acquired cumulatively. On top of it all, Coxhill's slippery soprano.

This is for blogger chum Marc down under who might not have this one (and who is a Lol aficionado, of course).

The facts:

Steve Miller Trio meets Lol Coxhill - Miller's Tale
Matchless Recordings MR9 1986

Steve Miller - piano
Tony Moore - double bass
Eddie Prevost - drums
Lol Coxhill - soprano saxophone

Side A - Nigh-and-Sly
Side B - Nether Eye
Side C - A Largeish Quart
Side D - Nowell's Flood

Recorded at a concert given at the Bull and Gate, Kentish Town, London on 11th November 1985 which was financially assisted by the Musicians' Union.

As the liner notes say; "You can hear witty barbs, serious debates, elbowing jokes, biting comments, affectionate banter, sarcastic asides and moments of repose".

More Coxhill coming up in the time to come!

JURE PUKL QUARTET "JAZZ GALLERY - NEW YORK, 2011"

Most of you won't know Jure Pukl. But after you've heard this live recording by his new quartet you will recognise a great new talent!

This post is approved by Jure Pukl himself - my thanks goes to him and Igor.

A CD with this quartet is available at  Storyville and here.

From Jure Pukl official website
"Pukl is one of the most profilic and creative saxophonists of the
younger Slovene jazz generation, Pukl obtained university education
abroad. He studied classical saxophone at the Vienna Music Academy,
and jazz saxophone in Vienna as well as at the Haag Conservatory of
Music. Jure then won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music,
where he pursued his studies with masters such as Joe Lovano and
George Garzone. He completed his masters degree in music at the Graz
Academy of Music. Throughout his studies Pukl performed and recorded
extensively, being engaged in his own projects, as well as working
with a number of European and foreign jazzmen, such as Maceo Parker,
Esperanza Spalding, Vijay Iyer, Damion Reid, Joe Sanders, Aaron
Goldberg, Marcus Gilmore, Jeremy Pelt, Jamire Williams, Howard Curtis,
Johnatan Blake, Renato Chicco, Bosko Petrovic, Francisco Mela, Miles
Griffith, Aruan Ortiz, Jason Palmer, Mike Janisch and orchestras like
Big Band RTV Slovenia, European Jazz Orchestra, European Movement Jazz
Orchestra, Vienna Saxophone Quartet, Nouvele Cousine and many others.
He has been touring extensively throughout USA, Asia and Europe
performing in venues such as Blue Note, The Jazz Gallery, Ronnie
Scotts, The Vortex, Pizza Express, Porgy & Bess, Stadtgarten and
festivals like Moers Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, Muenster
Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Jazz a Vienne to name a few. His
music has won him many awards; among others the 2005 first Jury Prize
and Best Composition Audience Award at the Jazzon International Music
Workshop and Festival in Novo mesto, Slovenia. In his auctorial
projects, such as the Virus quintet (receive rave reviews, among
others on the influential AllAboutjazz Web portal) Pukl dedicates
himself to modern interpretations of jazz. What he creates is a unique
type of modern jazz, avantgarde, free jazz and impressionistic
contemporary music performed with a great deal of knowledge and love,
giving prominence to the interplay between band members. He already
published 6 CD’s under his own name. The last one called Abstract
Society was recorded in New York with some of the finest musicians and
got rave reviews all over the globe and features Vijay Iyer, Damion
Reid and Joe Sanders. It has been released by the oldest european
indenpendet jazz record label Storyville Records from Denmark."

Among the featured guests were Dusko Goykovich, Clifford Jordan, Joe Henderson, Karin Krog, Charles Tolliver, Phil Woods, Slide Hampton, Art Farmer, Carmell Jones, Carl Drewo and John Surman...

MANFRED SCHOOF QUINTET/SEXTET "KÖLN & MONTREUX, 1967/68"

Here we have a short track from the same group as on the commercially released recordings. You'll find it also here.

The other track stems from a line-up which left no official traces - Dudek still in and Pilz already joining - so to say...and the drummer was Mani Meumeier who started to play Free Jazz with Irene Schweizer and founded the 'Krautrock' group Guru Guru the same year.

A later (?) video of James Newton performing with Allan Iwohara ist at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjVgwOpXxgg.
Again, the LP transfer was de-rumbled and de-clicked but otherwise left unchanged.

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH "GLOBE UNITY" (SABA, 1966)

"The cosmic eye at the central point and on the periphery of the sphere can see all the structures from every angle at the same time. From the divine indifference of the sphere emerge the solos with all the impulse of revolt. The lines they trace are the images of life."— Alexander von Schlippenbach, from the liner notes to Globe Unity (Saba, 1966).

As told to John Corbett by Peter Brötzmann: 'Out of the first trio (with Kowald and Sven-Åke Johnasson) and the Schoof/Schlippenbach Qunitet - Gerd Dudek was in it, Buschi, Jaki Liebezeit was the drummer - out of that combination was formed the first Globe Unity'. Not contradicting this, Jeske (1980), reported that Globe Unity was formed in autumn 1966 with a commission received by Alex von Schlippenbach from the Berlin Jazz Festival. 'We did three days of rehearsal in Koln and performed my composition entitled Globe Unity at the Philharmonie in Berlin on 3rd November. The piece was released on Saba the same year.' In the early days, the musical influences were various and the contributions and organization to some extent egalitarian, with Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald being particularly important. However, as the different 'periods' (Schlippenbach, 1993) were worked through Schlippenbach became the cornerstone and the provider of musical starting points for the group.........and in September 2012 Globe Uunity will be on the road again.

This was the birth of this unique orchestra which received great critics but the concert also has been titled “a men´s joke featuring the devil”

Gunter Hampel Quintet - Heartplants

In any discussion of what marks the starting point of European free jazz, this record might be high up on the list. We have posted Francois Tusques' "Free Jazz" in the past which was out in 1965 in France, certainly a turning point in the evolution of French jazz. This combo is German, however, and these are studio recordings from 1964, originally out on the Saba label, but here from a 70s reissue on Crystal Jazz.

Whether this is "free" jazz as commonly understood, is debatable imho, most of it is fairly melodic, though there are instances of unbound collective improvisation on the Schlippenbach-penned "Iron Perceptions". Nonetheless, in the detailed liner notes inside the gatefold sleeve, there are careful annotations about each track in which the individual musicians explain the structure and purpose of each piece. One epithet that might fit, to the extent that these terms carry any determinate meaning, is "structural" jazz and the pieces here certainly are well organised and thought out.

Joachim E. Berendt, the producer, makes a somewht overstated point about the Europeanness of this music, linking it to the cognitive heritage of the European tradition, which might have made sense at the time of writng, though not from the vantage point of 45 plus years on. Hampel was very much inclined to collaborate with kindred spirits on the other side of the pond, which we have documented in the past and will do again. Of course, we'll have more on the formative years of European free jazz, but one thing at a time, eh?

This was another second-hand find and as far as I know, not generally avaailable anymore, except, possibly, from other second-hand sources. Enjoy (as always) and revitalise the past! We'll certainly lend a helping hand!

Licorice Factory - self-titled

Here we have a nice find from a second-hand shop. It was the presence of Mark Whitecage and Perry Robinson that caught my attention, both of whom we have posted in the past, the former with Jeanne Lee and the latter with the UNI Trio (and we'll have more Robinson coming up shortly). Here they are joined by Mike Morgenstern, who is also listed as the executive producer for this recording. This is very much a collaborative effort, though the scattered information available seems to indicate that Robinson was the instigator of this licorice stick project, a colloquial term for clarinets. Because that's what this is, a clarinet trio backed by piano, bass and drums.

The presence of Robinson and Whitecage might point this in the direction of the avant garde, but there is nothing here to scare away the cat. Mostly standards and covers, two originals by Robinson and one by Morgenstern (also known these days as Mo Morgen). This is in a part dixieland, part Goodman, part modern sensibility bag. They even do a late evening smooch take on Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind". From what I have been able to find out, this Factory was a fairly short-lived affair, so I'm not sure if they left anything behind but this record, which came out on 1985. No cd rerelease as far as I know, so we have to stick with this platter, which is just fine with me. Vinyl rulez!

So settle back in the cozy chair, pour yourself a stiff one and enjoy (preferably in the company of your significant other). A good time is guaranteed for all!

Roswell Rudd - Maine

Roswell Rudd, Hans Dulfer, Arjen Gorter, Martin Van DuynHoven - Maine
BVHAAST 011

Here's a lively date from late 1976 at "de Krog" in Amsterdam featuring American trombonist Roswell Rudd with three Dutch players, Hans Dulfer on tenor sax, Arjen Gorter on double bass and Martin Van DuynHoven on drums. We have posted the three Dutch gentlemen before with Theo Loevendie, also in a quartet setting, most of it from about the same period as this date, mid- to late 70s.

Only three pieces on this lp, first the title track which starts out with a simple repetitive bass motif, a joint chorus from the two main players and successive solos from all four, finishing with a drum solo with the bass motif underneath and a restatement of the main chorus at the end. This is a killer funky groove with all players riding on the main pulse of the piece with cracking  rimshots from Van DoynHousen (and even a cowbell in there?). If jazz should invade the dance floor, this is a track to fire up the engine. The Rollins piece has Dulfer roaring away at full speed and Rudd taking it down in his solo in the second half of the piece (after turning the record, so to speak) and Van Duynhousen piledriving it again before the repetition of the chorus right at the end. The final Rudd is in a bluesy mode with Dulfer and Rudd again in the driver's seat, delivering some expert hard bop to round out the proceedings, Dulfer hotting it and Rudd cooling it.

This is a hyperkinetic date, top speed ahead from all four and to me, Dulfer is a revelation, even over-powering Rudd at times, particularly on the Rollins piece. Sometimes you need a bit of coolness to balance the hotness, and the soloists do compliment each other nicely.

Recommended, and to be played reasonably loud to appreciate the full dynamics of this wonderful date! And it's a topnotch recording to boot.

A1 Maine (Roswell Rudd)
A2 At Mc. Kie's (Part 1) (Sonny Rollins)
B1 At Mc. Kie's (Part 2) (Sonny Rollins)
B2 Big Thee (Roswell Rudd)

 Trombone – Roswell Rudd
Tenor Saxophone – Hans Dulfer
Bass – Arjen Gorter
Drums – Martin Van Duynhoven
