The Odean Pope Saxophone Choir - Live in Moers '80

"The saxophone choir is formatted with nine saxophones, and was established by Odean in 1977 and premiered in 1985 with a Soul Note album called “The Saxophone Shop.” The saxophone choir has been the realization of his southern legacy; a medium for creating the richly textured harmonic sound that has permeated his musical soul since childhood."

Abdullah Ibrahim and Carlos Ward - Live at Sweet Basil

Here's another follow-up to an earlier post. A while ago we posted a set of these two gentlemen recorded at Kalisz in Poland in December 1984. Fourteen months prior to the concert in Poland, they recorded this set at the Sweet Basil in New York in October 1983. The promised Vol. 2 has never appeared.

SAM RIVERS TUBA TRIO & EARL CROSS SEXTET "JAZZ OF THE SEVENTIES" (CIRCLE RECORDS, 1973/76)

Some weeks ago I relistened to Noah Howard's "Black Ark" - again Earl Cross impressed me with his wonderful playing.
I started a reasearch about reccordings with/from Mr.Cross - there are very few and less are available.
Thanks to W. who kindly borrowed me this LP we are now able to enjoy one of the rare appearances of the trumpet/fluegelhorn player extraordinaire: Earl Cross!

As a "bonus" the LP contains a song of Sam Rivers Tuba Trio....three LPs from a concert at the Bimhuis were released on the german (Cologne) lable Circle - this is not the concluding track.
For "Essence XI" we would need "Sam Rivers/James Newton - Flutes" also on Circle Records...

Does anyone have the first three LPs?

Charles Tyler - Definite vol. 2

We posted vol. 1 of this set recently and glmlr was generously able to supply us with a digital copy of vol. 2, which we post hereby.

I have always been a fan of Tyler. There is something intangibly melancholic sweet to his tone which resonates with me and of course, his compositions also have that undefinable quality which endears him to me. I guess my favourite album is the "Eastern Man Alone" which has Tyler with one cellist and two bassists. A somewhat unusual combination, for sure, but one that works, at least to these ears. His 70s output is fine as well and what we have on offer is an early 80s concert at Fasching in Stockholm, Sweden.

As always, Tyler switches between alto and baritone on this redording and the A side features him on alto and the B side on baritone. Personally, I have a preference for his alto as I find it to be more expressive, but the gruffer, more abrasive sound of his baritone brings out another side of his musical personality.

All in all, essential listening IMHO.

We have posted some further Tyler in the past, but I don't know whether the links are still operative.

Basic facts:

Sonny Sharrock - Space Ghost Coast to Coast

I was quite delighted to come across an unknown Sharrock in the Vitous post below, so just to follow up on that pleasant discovery, here is the last commercial release from Sharrock before his untimely passing away in 1994. This was done for the Cartoon Network TV channel, basically Sharrock and a drummer, but with a bassist and a bit of vocal on the first two tracks. Unmistakably Sharrocky throughout on this, whatchamacallit, EP, I spose. Good rocking stuff!

01. Hit Single
02. Cinnamon Ghost
03. Out To Launch
04. Fear Of A Ghost Planet
05. Rocket #99
06. Ghost Planet National Anthem

According to Discogs, these are the players (though undisclosed on the actual cd):

Bass, Horns – Eddie Horst
Drums – Lance Carter
Guitar – Sonny Sharrock
Vocals – Alfreda Gerald

This has been doing the rounds on blogs in mp3 format, but as this is off my own cd, we'll settle for flac. No second best solution here!

A Call to all Charles Mingus Fans ( a propos the Documentary in the making- C.Mingus ,a True Jazz Legend by his Grandson Kevin Ellington Mingus)

Dear Friends , we the Administrators ,here at Inconstant Sol united in our admiration of and love for the music of Charles Mingus,a pivotal, indisputably central figure in the History of 20th Century music... have recently learned of a nascent Film project being put together at present by Kevin Ellington Mingus , the great man's grandson (Who incidently is an improvising bassist & composer in his own right) , and have agreed to support it in any way we can .
Kevin Mingus describes his main motivation for making this film as

"A grandson’s journey through the lore and legends of jazz history to find his grandfather, Charles Mingus."... read about it here on his website.

Through contact with his representatives, it has also come to our attention that those involved in this project are seeking unpublished concert footage and or any other possibly relevant archival materials .

We ask therefore ,that if you are in possession of anything that is unpublished and relevant you please consider making those archival materials available to the film makers.
You can contact the Project through Kevin Mingus's website , feel free also to contact us through the email address's in our blogger profiles so that we can pass on your details.

I cant stress enough that we believe this is an important project and urge all concerned parties ,to support it anyway they can .
I'd also like to declare that we will be promoting this project further upon completion and or release, and to add that we have absolutely no financial interest or stake of any kind in the project.

Thank you!
S

**************************************************

Hello,

We are very happy to announce that we launched our fund-raising
campaign today (Wednesday, 9 Nov. 2011) for the project "Mingus on
Mingus". We have a big challenge ahead of us and we would like to
count on help. A successful campaign means we can move forward
with the project and capture moments that we might otherwise loose.
The making of the documentary will be a long road but having the
resources to begin our journey is all we can hope for.
We know it will not be possible without your help and we are all
at your disposal for any questions or feedback you may have.

Our goal is to raise $45,000 in 40 days. With your post in your blog, you will help us to reach out the community. Thank you!

Best,
Valeria Rios

--- Update ---

We have a few days left.
We need the help of everyone.
Every single Dollar counts.
We post new pledges on the campaign.
We do not have any support of the Mingus Estate. This is a completely independent project.

We definitively need much more support, we have to push push and push.

There are many enthusiast fans and players that we have yet to reach. With your help we can connect them to the project and motivate the onlookers to support it.

Valeria Rios.

--- Update ---

Hello,

I have received many inquiries concerning relationship between Mingus
on Mingus and Sue Mingus:
- Is Sue affiliated to the Mingus on Mingus project?
- Why is Sue not supporting the project?
- Why there is no information on the project on the Official Charles
Mingus Website and Facebook page?
- Why is Sue not listed as an interviewee?
To that end Kevin Ellington Mingus have written the following Open
Letter, here is the link http://orangethenblue.com/open-letter/

We have 10 days left and we've got some support from you, please, we
need to push harder and as you'll notice from the letter we are
working quite independently. Now more than ever we need to spread the
word to make this project real.

Thank you!!!
Valeria

-------------------------- --- Update ---!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello bloggers,
I know Kevin wrote you an email, but I want to do it myself too as I
am the one who has been in touch with you from the beginning.
As you well know we are super-grateful for all the support we are
receiving from you, we made it public again in our last update of the
campaign yesterday. As you can read in an earlier update we are having
some good news for distribution!! many festivals seem to be interested
in showing the doc when is finished.... but FIRST WE NEED TO FINISH
IT! and for that we need the funds of Kickstarter.
WE ARE VERY VERY CLOSE, we have raised more than $33,000 and we just
need a FINAL PUSH TO JUMP TO THE GOAL.
So please!!! make an update, a very short note, anything in your blog
that everyone who did not pledge decides to do it. We really really
really need this last help.

You can take from the website or from our Kickstarter page anything
you want for the post (from the updates as well)
http://kck.st/vCCn8N
www.orangethenblue.com
FYI: we have new pledges as some jazz clubs have donated some tickets
for their clubs and M.Weintrob has donate some of his photographs as
well to pledge.

Again thank you soooo much for your support, you are and will be
always present in this project!!!

A big hug,
Valeria

Last 24 hours!! "Mingus on Mingus" can be real because of you.
Thanks to all the support we are receiving. We still need to make the
last sprint.
Help us by pledging to the project and spreading the word to everyone
around you.
Let's get on the Big Screen!

All my best,

COMPANY 1 [Altena - Bailey - Honsinger - Parker] (INCUS, 1976)

For the first concert COMPANY was Maarten van Regteren Altena, Tristan Honsinger, Evan Parker and myself. On the following day the same four musicains taped the music from which this first COMPANY record was chosen. Altogether we recorded a number of duo pieces, all the possible trio combinations, and also a quartet. The music on this record represents the four trio combinations and is the result of each trio taping approximately twenty-five minutes music out of which one 10 to 12 minute piece was in each case chosen for the record.
Usually in making a selection from recorded group improvisation the choice of the material to be used is based on a communally agreed verdict as to which music is 'the best' of that available. In this case, with the permission of the other players, I was the sole arbiter and made the four selections without consulting the other three as to their preferences. In my choice I was guided by one specific criterion; I chose that part of the music by each trio which seemed to me to be most characteristic of improvisation and which best revealed the qualities which can be found only im improvisation. (Music and text by Mr.Bailey [rip provided by Nick & posted by me...])

Enjoy!
