Art Ensemble of Chicago and the European Free Jazz Orchestra live in Frankfurt 1970

Some may recall that on the Church #9 blog, I contributed a rip of the "Gittin' to know y'all", a record on the MPS label that collected moments off the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1969. The gist of the title was the meeting of American musicians living in Europe, many associated with the Chicago-based AACM organisation, with a select assortment of European musicians under the general banner of free jazz. What I didn't know at the time was that there was a Gittin' to know y'all, part 2, comprising the AEC quartet with the European Free Jazz Orchestra, all happening in Frankfurt some months later.

So, for the sake of historical comprehensiveness, here is the piece, composed and led and introduced by Lester Bowie. He decided to rename it, considering the venue and the time, "Germany Unite", quite a prescient thing to say in 1970. Briefly, the piece can be divided into four fairly discernable sections. First is the opening with instruments on top of an orchestral drone backdrop, not unlike Gittin part 1. A quieter section follows with Roscoe Mitchell to the fore, here on bass sax. Afer that, a vocal section with Karin Krog and Jeanne Lee, both exquisite and freewheeling (the former was also on the Gittin MPS lp on a short vocal-only track). Finally, the ochestra shifts gear into a collective blowout, with Joseph Jarman in the foreground, on tenor. A couple of brief orchestral statements and the piece is over, a little over half an hour in all.

All good stuff and an extra treat for those who dug Gittin part 1. I sure did!

Billy Bang Vietnam Aftermath - live in Saalfelden 2002

With the death of an artist, there is, perhaps predictably, a flourish of online activity to commemorate the said artist. Billy Bang was no exception. About a dozen concert recordings have turned up and among them, I thought this one carried a special significance. This was the Vietnam Aftermath band, largely composed of members who had shared the experience of serving in Vietnam in their youth. For Bang and his ex-combatants, the project offered a chance to work with and work through the emotional demons generated by serving in a war that never was popular and ended in defeat. As with war experiences in general, what happened often remained unsaid unless one marshalled the courage to deal with it, personally or therapeutically in company with others.

For his and his co-musicians, Bang wrote up eight tunes that in various ways captured the Vietnam war reality. Motives from Asian music are mixed in with familiar jazz idioms, for instance in the theme of the opening track which also is the first off on this concert recording. We'll get to hear five pieces off the Vietnam aftermath cd, and as the band was called back for an encore, we'll get a sixth, Bien Hoa Blues. As Bang lived in Germany on and off, he gave a shot at introducing the band and himself in German as well.

This aftermath cd was followed up by Vietnam Reflections, though without Frank Lowe, who had died in the meantime and he later went on to collaborate with Vietnamese musicians. All in all, a very positive hour, and a proof that music can be life-affirming, in the case of Billy Bang, a deep truth and not a cliche.

There was an announcement about a reissue of the Horo catalogue. But apart of a few CDs (Rivers,Shepp, Sun Ra and Konitz/Solal duo), which are now - again? - OOP , we have still to wait until it eventually will happen.

Marcel Bárta (born 1974) is active on Czech jazz scene since 90's. He formerly played alto & soprano sax and bass clarinet (strongly influenced by Eric Dolphy), in recent years he is playing mostly tenor instead of alto. Muff was first project under his leadership and was main attraction in Prague jazz clubs during late 90's and early years of our century. Their inspirations include electric Miles, as well as many contemporary and nu jazz stuff. Band stopped playing for some years then, as members were busy in other line-ups like NUO, Vertigo Quintet, Soil, Ondřej Konrád & Gumbo or Face Of The Bass. Their reformation is tied mostly with opening of new place, Jazz Dock club at Vltava riverside in 2oo9, where keyboard player Jakub Zitko is doing programme, in between his musician's duties. Muff released fine debut album on Animal Music label in 2o1o, but this old recording remains unequalled due to my ears. Great sax and bass clarinet playing, as well as inventive hammond work.

On this latest record, Jiří Stivín presents his musical ideas in a way completely different from entirely spontaneous character of his previous LP's. The usual pulsation of the rhythm section with bass and drums are absent here, while - for instance - the ostinato figures of the vocal chorus and the classical string quartet are the prime bearers of metro-rhythmic texture. In both cases, Stivín is assisted by leading ensembles from the realm of classical music: the Kühn Mixed Chorus and the Talich Quartet, the latter boasting fresh laurels of the Grand Prix of Charles Cross for its recording of Dvořák's string quartets for French Calliope company. Actually, since the dissolution of the Stivín & Dašek System Tandem, Stivín has been increasingly presenting himself to the public as a performer of baroque and contemporary concert music. Many of the stimuli he has thus absorbed have - transformed in an original manner - found their way into music of Zodiac, a striking contrast to prevailingly kaleidoscopic character of the standard way of playing jazz. Here one should seek the origin of Stivín's striving for a more coherent design of the album's musical canvas in the form of two four-movement cycles and a long final composition as a summing up.

LE QUATUOR DE JAZZ LIBRE DU QUÉBEC (LONDON, 1969)

Here we have the first Free Jazz recording made in Québec (or in Canada?) - it was provided by the same generous contributor who also shared Don Cherry's " Movement Incorporated".

There is almost no information about this group available - but it seems to be clear that
they changed the line-up and name of the band very often throughout the years.

I have found the back cover at the www, but it is insecure wether it belongs to the same recording. Also the titles of the short tracks are unknown.


The following was the answer from the contributor (thank you again D.) to my inquiry:

"I think it's the same album, but there may have been two different versions of it. Mine had these miniature pieces, of 8, 12 seconds long. I really don't remember the titles of the tracks. The back cover that I had was with a text in both French and English written by Jean Préfontaine, the leader, with july 1969 and his signature."


This I have found at the webside of the "thecanadianencyclopedia.com":

"Quatuor de jazz libre du Québec (originally, Quatuor du nouveau jazz libre du Québec; familiarly, Jazz libre). Montreal-based ensemble active 1967-74 in the then avant-garde style of jazz known as 'free music' and also, in the late 1960s, in pop music contexts. It numbered among its original members Jean Préfontaine (tenor saxophone), Yves Charbonneau (trumpet), Maurice C. Richard (bass), and Guy Thouin (percussion). Richard was spelled briefly (1972-3) by Yves Bouliane; Thouin was replaced ca 1973 by Jean-Guy Poirier, and Poirier soon after by Mathieu Léger. The pianist Pierre Nadeau joined the quartet for its sole recording, Le Quatuor de jazz libre du Québec (1968, RCI 271/Lon NAS-131515).

Jazz libre worked in Montreal bars (the Casa Espagnol, the Barrel, etc) and Quebec colleges and universities, assisted Robert Charlebois, Yvon Deschamps, and Mouffe in the revues Peuple à genoux (1968), L'Osstidcho (1968), and L'Osstidchomeurt (1969), and took part 1968-70 in Walter Boudreau's Infonie. It toured in France with Charlebois and Louise Forestier in 1969, and appeared on recordings by Charlebois (including 'Lindberg') and Infonie.

After operating an artistic and political commune, le Petit Québec libre, 1970-2 at Ste-Anne-de-la-Rochelle in the Eastern Townships, the quartet moved in 1973 to the Amorce, a coffeehouse in Old Montreal, performing there until the club's destruction 25 Jun 1974 at an arsonist's hand.Jazz libre also performed in 1973 at the Autunno musicale di Como, a festival in Italy. The quartet was not active after 1974, but the tradition of free improvisation that it established in Montreal was sustained in turn by the Atelier de musique expérimentale and EMIM. A Jazz libre reunion was attempted at the 1989 FIJM in conjunction with a performance by Guy Thouin's recently-formed Heart Ensemble but was cancelled due to lack of public interest."

I really would like to recommend a double CD > Al Neil Trio "Retrospective 1965-1968".
It's worth every penny I gave. It is a limited edition. And Gregg Simpson is the drummer.
A real important piece of Jazz history - and with music as excellent and singular as any better known ensembles from this time.
