BERLINER IMPROVISATIONS QUARTETT ( AMIGA, 1979)

This lp opened my ears for the Free Music scene in the GDR. It's not Free Jazz or Free Improvisation. It is a category of its own. Although the lyrics are "spoken" (a reference could be "Pierrot Lunaire" by Schönberg) in German (Beaudelaire...) the music is quite outstanding.
Really independent music - for example Andreas Altenfelder's trumpet work on track 5 or Manfred Schulze's bariton sax musings which are througout insistent but never hermetic.

Manfred Schulze who was the founder of the M.S. Bläser Quintet has died 2010. From 1992 he was forced to abandon music because of a grave disease.

Hermann Keller is still active - among his activities/groups is the Berliner Improvisations Trio/Quartet with Antje Messerschmidt (violin and viola), Jürgen Kupke (clarinets) and Ulrich Weber on trumpet and fluegelhorn.

Andreas Altenfelder was playing with the Willem Breuker Kollektiev
for at least 20 years.

Of Wilfried Staufenbiel's whereabouts I have no clue.

This is the Amiga lp plus two more...

Manfred Schulze, baritone saxophone, clarinet
Hermann Keller, piano, vocals

Joelle Leandre-Les Douzes Sons LP, 1983 Nato

Heres a stunning, hugely enjoyable improv Record on the lamented Nato label.

Joelle Leandre= Godess One of the most unfailingly riveting contemporary improvisors..
if you havent heard her , this is a great place to start , the variety and level of invention through out is staggering.
and whats more its laced with droll humour typical of Nato 's house aesthetic.

The Fun ,and sheer pleasure of playing are palpable throughout , perhaps even the very essence of the record.

Joelle's Dog Miss Biscotte is featured in a hilarious trio with George Lewis.
The full line up is J.Leandre, G.Lewis, Annick Nozati, Irene Scheizer, Ernst Reyseger, and legendary bassist Barre Phillips.

wonderful stuff.. those interested in checking out more OOP Nato lps go here AND HERE

Bernd Alois Zimmermann-the Numbered, Improvisations & Tratto (Wergo-2549-005) 1969 featuring Manfred Schoof's quintet

Here's another Wergo Lp , mentioned In the comments to Onxydlib's post of Manfred Schoofs ,wonderful 1967 debut.
This features the Compositions of Bernd Alois Zimmerman one of the most significant post war European Composers.

Zimmermann had a life long love of jazz and its spontaneity ,the forms associated with jazz and the blues are often referenced however obtusely in many of his own works.
The individuality of his unique Vision seems to be ever more clearly evident and relevant.

A postmodernist before the term was ever invented , like his contemporary Mauricio Kagel (who had in his youth been a trumpeter)
Serial ,and aleatory techniques mingle with myriad fragments of popular musics, marching bands ,swing ,the blues..baroque music and quotes from contemporaneous scores , just about anything really.
all this at times fractured and pulverised then re filtered through the seemingly conversational flow of the musical organism .

Yes i like his music alot ... and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves richly textured complex kaleidoscopic musics.
The Wergo Site is a great place to start , since they have documented the majority of his oeuvre.

His life was sadly cut short by chronic depression ,he suicided in 1970.

I bought this record whilst first exploring free jazz and improvised musics, and having stumbled across European echoes a few months before , i was somewhat bemused and disappointed at first.

Finding side A ,(on which Schoof's original quintet performs incidental music to a radio play, and improvisations on themes from Zimmermann's opera Die Soldaten) restrained , and a little bloodless
.
Now of course i love it , it is restrained ,indeed very quiet for long periods.

also note that ,Jaki Liebziet's drumming is consistently inventive throughout , negotiating every rapid fire change, and the huge dynamic range like a virtuoso, amazing given that he must have been barely out of his teens.

The second piece is an electronic subtly oscillating drone piece from 1966, sounding Perhaps a little like 3 or 4 Elaine Radigue pieces played simultaneously.

i have looked for this both on the Wergo site and elsewhere to no avail i assume therefore that it is out of print, although i have a feeling that perhaps Tratto the electronic piece has been reissued elswhere , perhaps an electro acoustic compilation of some sort...

Enjoy
and check out Both Zimmermann ,and Schoofs work if you get a chance.

FRIEDHELM SCHÖNFELD "FRIEDHELM SCHÖNFELD" AMIGA 1978 (FLAC)

Here we have a lesser known musician from the GDR. Although his first half LP "Trio-Dimensionen" (1973) one can find more than once in blogland. The group from this recording - founded already in 1966 - consisted of Günter "Baby" Sommer and Klaus Koch and F.Schönfeld.
He was with Joachim Kühn, Manfred Schulze and the musicians from Synopsis/Zentralquartet a pioneer in the development of east german Free Jazz.
His commitement allowed musicians from the "west" to perform outside Berlin (1970s) - which before wasn't approved by the authorities.
He worked for theater , maintained workshops and several other projects.
1983 he emigrated to Canada and 1985 to the western part of Berlin.
He is now a professor for saxophon and Big Band and is still playing. His recent recording is on the label Jazzwerkstatt ("Start" JW008 --> http://www.records-cd.com/product_info.php/info/p4611213_Start.html).

Aladar Pege later became famous as a virtuoso bassist - which articulates clearly on this recording.

This is a more "conventional" recording than my previous posts but by all means worth to listen to. No artwork - as I haven't found the cover in the net. > Thanks to Owombat for the high quality cover scan.

Baden Baden Free Jazz Meeting 1971 - audio upgrade

We posted a while back a set of recordings from the above event, but only in mp3 as that was the only format available. Meanwhile, bialero has been discreetly slipping in lossless versions of these recordings in the comment section of the earlier post. These may easily be overlooked, so I thought it warranted a separate "front page". I can't say how much these posts match the earlier ones, because I haven't had a chance to listen through the full set of both.

Anyway, here's the basic info:

Wadada Leo Smith & New Dalta Ahkri - Live in Florence '79

The New Dalta Ahkri (the name of the open groups led by Wadada
during the Seventies) stands out for a music that is always balanced
between written and improvised parts : Wadada's scores contain
only a part of what you're listening to, even if the first impression
is that the musicians read nearly all.

HERBERT JOOS QUARTET "KERCHAK SUITE" (PLÄNE, 1980)

The music from Herbert Joos has clearly mellowed on this lp from 1980.

However - he has a distinct sound. The cover is again from Joos himself.

MANFRED SCHOOF SEXTET WERGO (FLAC)

Here is the next item in my german series. Early Free Jazz from Manfred Schoof and his Sextet.
By the way - I don't think that I am a specialist in this special department of music. I am interested in creative music - primarly coming from the Jazz heritage - and as I live in Germany it makes sense to me to try to discover also this tradition. But my (musical) interests are much more global . So - don't be surprised or disappointed if there will be music from other parts of our planet. Off course you won't be...

This is the original cover.
And here is the lineup for Manfred Schoof's WERGO (1967) lp:
(from the lp)
Manfred Schoof,tp,co,flh
Gerd Dudek,ss,ts,cl
Alex von Schlippenbach,p

FOURMENONLY - VOL.1 and EIGHT SCIENCE FICTION STORIES (FLAC)

Here are the complete (almost) recordings of FOURMENONLY .
After the bassist left the the MODERN JAZZ QUINTET KARLSRUHE they continued as a quartet. On ESFS they added the trombone player Wolfgang Czelusta but still under their chosen name.
The following words are from G.F. (thank you!) a fellow at Dime:"The last concert with Fourmenonly (with bass-player Johannes Schädlich with Wilfried Eichhorn, Helmut Zimmer and Rudi Theilmanm) happened in the early 80s in Karlsruhe - without Herbert Joos, who had left Karlsruhe and the others. Wilfried Eichhorn continued playing with the Frederic Rabold Crew in the late 70s (vocalist Lauren Newton started here!), and he played mostly in a Duo with pianist Uli Bühl in the 90s. Helmut Zimmer played mostly Bop Standards afterwards and occasionally still plays that kind of stuff. Rudi Theilmann is still active, playing mostly in Duo with violinist Helmut Bieler-Wendt. He participated since 1985 in another great free-improvising group, Dinkel-Frisch-Theilmann&Bieler-Wendt, they recorded two albums in the late 80s."

Herbert Joos himself worked in his own groups and ad hoc ensembles.
Participated at a Free Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden. 1973 he made his first solo recording "The Philosophy Of The Fluegelhorn" on JAPO(ECM). On this lp he also uses multitracking to astounding effects. The music there is maybe "more" beautiful in a conventional manner. But never "sweet" - instead he shows a strong developed sense for harmonics and "Klangfarbe".
Later he joined the Vienna Art Orchestra. Still active as a pro and going strong.
I only want to add that the last track on "Vol.1" is one of my favourite pieces from this four astounding lps.

Please! Please someone reissue them!

FREE JAZZ GROUP WIESBADEN "FRICTIONS" & DIETER SCHERF QUARTET "INTERACTION" (FLAC)

Before posting more from Herbert Joos I'd like to share two lps from and
with Dieter Scherf.
The Free Jazz Group Wiesbaden were
a collaborative combo from Michael Sell, Scherf, König and Schlick.
Sell studied politics and chemistry and
Scherf was an engineer.
Sell and Scherf provided the thematic
material for this group which lasted from 1969 to 1972.
But especially the guitarist König provides an original voice to the proceedings. Playing virtual multifunctional with a distinct
sensibility for sound and great imagination.
FJGW disbanded 1973. Scherf continued for a while mainly in a trio with Paul Lovens and Jacek Bednarek.

(The music from this trio was reissued on Atavistic : http://www.atavistic.com/catalog.php?cs=2&at=1 . Buy it! You won't be disappointed.)

Later Scherf devoted himself more and more to his profession as engineer.
Michael Sell should become one of the more distinguished composers of european Jazz Avantgarde. Although his affinity to Jazz was questioned not only by himself. Wether this is correct we can hear by ourselves during the next weeks. (I plan to share some recordings under Sell's name as well). Today he does not play trumpet anymore.

Dieter Scherf has, to my knowledge, forsaken music. (Update 2014 - he continued to play piano albeit in a more mainstream setting) What became of König and Schlick I do not know. About the lp "Interaction" I assume that it is one of his last projects. I got it as a gift without any information.

Literature about these musicians is sparse and mostly out of print. But I would like to mention at least one book. "Europas Jazz 1960 - 80" from Ekkehard Jost (a sax player alike) is the "bible" of european Free Jazz. Sadly it is only in German.

Through this book I became aware that there is a distinct european Jazz scene.

Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe - Position 2000 (FLAC)

Here is the second MJQK'HE.
The cover is from Herbert Joos (also the picture from "Trees").
He has studied graphic arts and from 1958 onwards also acoustic bass.
On brass he is self-educated, although later he took private lessons.
The MJQK started mid-sixties as a bop orientated group. Mainly through Joos they began to add freer and more personal concepts into the groups music.
All members were amateurs (not in the sense of being unable but simply they had "daily" professions). For example Helmuth Zimmer was an architect and Rudi Theilmann is a art historian.
They made two lps as MJQK. After Claus Bühler the bassist left the group during a concert two more were recorded as "Fourmenonly" (Vol.1 & Eight Science Fiction Stories). Arguments about loudness and the general direction the music went induced the split.
The compilation "Born Free" from the 12th German Jazzfestival
(these Lps were in fact a bootleg - none from the musicians were asked for permission or received any royalties) and a sampler from the NDR broadcast station (NDR Jazzworkshop '73) included each one piece by MJQK (abridged) & Fourmenonly. Apart from this I know only one bootleg with about 20 minutes music.

In contrast to some FMP artists their music was more thematic orientated and powerplay was used only sparingly to highlight formal contrasts. Their use of multitracking was unsual and led to negativ critic from musicians, journalists and listeners alike. But for achiveving more complex textures and/or backgrounds they used this method spontaneously from "Position 2000" onward. Basically Herbert Joos said that they would use such procedures to create the music they wanted without a greater assemblage of musicians which were not available or compliant.

The whereabouts of the other musicians and why Joos has left the group will be described within the next post.

If you have more or specific questions I am happy to oblige.
Hopefully my english isn't too strange or whatever.
The link is found in the comments.

MODERN JAZZ QUINTET KARLSRUHE "TREES" (Excenter, 1968)

Here is my first contribution to my favourite blog.
Thank you kinabalu and sotise for the invitation.

I wanted to share this LP from the MJQK'HE already for a long time. For me this recording exemplifies the "lost" or better the almost forgotten part of the Free Jazz continuum.

Sadly no reissue is due - at least to my knowledge.
Only one track from "Trees" was reissued on a compilation about german Free Jazz last year. But it is
deleted as well.

I don't want to make more words for the moment. (I post this with 38° celsius fever)
Download and listen. If there is interest I will share more from this group.
If someone wants more information about this group - I will provide you with what I know about this group/musicians.
Sorry for the small picture - it is scanned from a selfmade CD booklet. Also I'm really not an expert in Photoshop et.al.
Please remember it's my "first" - I hope everything will work!
Thanks

Harry Beckett Trio live in Cottbus, DDR, 1982

More Harry Beckett and there will be even more in the time to come. This is a killer set from the old German Democratic Republic, showing that they weren't entirely cloth-eared as far as jazz was concerned on the eastern side of the wall.

This is Beckett in a 70s Miles mode, but not in the funky fusion mode which is what you might have expected. Short, clipped bursts of trumpet, sparse, nothing ostentatious. Behind is the juggernaut of Harry Miller and Louis Moholo which guarantees that it's gotta be good. Of course, we've heard of the Osborne and Brötzmann trios with these two super-heros so I'm extremely happy to have found this set and to be able to share it with all of you. This is off the Dime network, but these jazzy golden nuggests tend to disappear all too soon, so I'm determined to keep it available here on this blog.

A Blindfold Test

The question is : who are the three musicians (alto sax-bass/cello-
drums)?

Probably you don't have many chances of answering the question but,
certainly, will be able to give a more objective judgment about the music.

I actually posted an MP3 version of this concert, but this is a flac copy provided by LYM. I hope he is happy for me to provide my own Rapidshare links of his original share.

Karin Krog - Break of Day in Molde

Following Riccardo's veeery looong post, I thought it was time for a short one. The Molde international jazz festival just completed its 50th festival yesterday. Started in 1961, it was been running every year since then and despite the 50th anniversary strictly speaking being next year, this year's festival marked the actual anniversary. Early yesterday, a Break of Day in Molde concert at 7 in the morning had Artist in Residence Nils Petter Molvær waking up the crowd with electronic composer Geir Jenssen, also known as Biosphere, joining him on stage.

A fixture over the year has been Karin Krog. She appeared at the very first one back in 1961 and was of course back at this year's festival to perform the above song among many others. The inspiration for the tune was the very early morning mood after a long after hours jam session in a mountain cabin above town. The tune, Carla Bley's "Ida Lupino", has words added by Karin Krog to describe the fresh early morning vibe. The B-side is a straight blues, "Blues Eyes", with the presence of Ted Curson on trumpet in the near-all Scandinavian crew.

Above is the front and back of the single out on the Sonet label back in 1969. For many years it was only available in this format, though the recent re-release of "Joy" has these two tracks added to the original set. As a little bonus, I've added the Paul Bley version of "Ida Lupino" off his "Closer" album which has Steve Swallow and Barry Altschul on bass and drums, respectively.

Line-up:

Karin Krog, vocals
Ted Curson, trumpet
Elisabeth Sønstevold, harp
Bernt Egerbladh, organ
Arild Andersen, bass
Jon Christensen, drums

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath with Archie Shepp en concert a Banlieues Bleues

What with the World Cup in football finale a day away, I thought it was about time to sneak in some South African music here. Another good reason is that this one was requested on a jazz-related mailing list. So therefore ...

This was the final installment of the Brotherhood of Breath, recorded at the Banlieues Bleues festival in France in 1989. The previous year had seen the release of "Country Cooking", a studio recording with many of the players on this live concert. By the late 80s, the only remaining from the original BoB was Harry Beckett, apart from McGregor, of course. A couple of tunes from that record was carried over to this cd, the title track the most obvious one.

An added delight was the appearance of Archie Shepp who contributed a couple of his own tunes and can be heard on tenor throughout the whole concert. A worthy replacement for Dudu Pukwana, one might say, though BoB without Dudu was not quite the same. The South African influence is quite strong on the first four tracks, while the latter three veers into more standard jazz territory and the penultimate one with the added treat of some Sheppian vocals culminating in a jouyous and swinging concert through and through. The first and fourth tracks features the vocals of Sonti Mndebélé, a fresh member adding a touch of sisterhood. Finally, the album features a piano very much out of tune. A pianist's curse, I suppose.

1. Sangena (Chris McGregor/Sonti Mndebélé)
2. Mayebuye (Chris McGregor)
3. Country Cooking (Chris McGregor)
4. Jikele (Traditional)
5. Presentation
6. Steam (Archie Shepp)
7. Sweet as Honey (Chris McGregor)
8. Bessie Smith's Blues (Archie Shepp)

The full line-up can be found in the scans with the attached files.

Here are a couple of photos from Maxine McGregor's book:
