John Stevens Freebop - Live at Bracknell Jazz Festival July 3rd 1982 (FM Recording)

This is a rare example of the group led by the late great drummer John Stevens, called "Freebop". It was recorded by the BBC at the Bracknell (Berks, UK) Jazz Festival July 1982 and subsequently broadcast on FM radio. This posting comes from a bit torrent upped by "6135terry", my thanks to him. Of particular interest to me about this music, is the presence of altoist Pete King, who is a beebopper, not known for his excursions into this territory. The other band members are stalwarts of the UK free jazz scene (sadly though, Paul Rutheford passed away very recently, Stevens died in 1994).

There are only 25 minutes on this broadcast, the full concert was subsequently released on vinyl on the Affinity label (AFF101), from which the above image is obtained. This record is long OOP, if anyone has it I'd love to know as I think it was the only recording of this band. Stevens of course recorded as leader of many other bands, perhaps most notably SME. Many of the SME recordings are available on the EMANEM label.

New York Art Quartet - Mohawk (1965)

I think this may have been posted before on a blog, but not for some time, so I guess some people don't have it. It was a short-lived quartet, which produced only two recordings to my knowledge, of which this is the second. The quartet, led by alto saxophonist John Tchicai, have a very distinctive sound, never reproduced by any other ensemble. The uniqueness of the sound comes from the collective interpretations of the tunes, rather from any long solos.

It is also interesting to note that all four members of the quartet are still alive and peforming (to my knowledge).

stanley crouch, free jazz drummerman ?

Here’s a great one , from a very adventurous youthful david murray, this was a seasoned band, and it contains some of murrays most "out" playing ever, I have to confess im a huge fan of murrays , and this period from roughly 75- 82 produced some of the best so called “free jazz” tenor in the history of the music, this is well on par and in my view better than what people like gayle, and david s ware are now doing, somewhat different too, although theres no doubting albert aylers influence here(flowers for albert is a dedication to ayler)
1960’s sonny Rollins is also a huge influence.
With butch morris , fred Hopkins, and the great don pullen on board, you pretty much get the idea in advance that its going to burn red hot.
A lot of free jazz snobs who are suspicious of virtuosity and prefer a noisy staccato attack , and full on multi phonic assault, view murray as a sellout, I love (very selectively his later stuff too) and if possible I recommend to their attentions the very moving tribute to don pullen on diw called ‘the long goodbye’.

The real surprise for younger people here must surely be Stanley crouches’s presence as drummer with this band, crouch is now best known as a reactionary critic who dismisses cecil taylor as not being in the black music tradition at all, and who through his enormous power over the likes of protégés like wynton marsallis has spread his neo con dogma,throughout all mediums including television and film the most notorious example being his presence as eminence grise behind the scenes of ken burns series about jazz.

Crouch was once a stalwart of the loft scene, who though no where near as inventive and authoritative as milford graves , Andrew cyrille and sunny murray , or phillip Wilson(who also drummed with this group), none the less does surpassingly well.
This was originally released as 2 separate albums vol1 “penthouse jazz’ and vol2 “holy siege on intrigue”
This rip though was taken from the semi bootleg cd released in 1990 on the westwind label which is now out of print.

Zappatistas - Live at Frankfurt Jazz Festival Oct 2003 (FM Recording)

Zappatistas is a Frank Zappa tribute band, composed of a group of British jazz musicians led by guitarist John Etheridge, who is perhaps best known for his work with Soft Machine in the 1970s. Since then, he's played with classicist violinist Nigel Kennedy, and other former Soft Machine stalwarts such as Elton Dean and John Marshall, and with Stephane Grappelli. I don't know too much about the other band members, with the exception of Annie Whitehead, who runs her own band and is considered as Britain's finest female trombone players (though I must admit I couldn't name any others).

I'm no particular fan of Frank Zappa, but I saw the Zappatistas live a couple of years ago at a local club and I thought they were tremendous. Unfortunately, they have made only one recording, which I think is no longer available. Also, their gigs are few and far between, as I expect the musicians don't want to become typecast into a tribute repetoire. I obtained this recording from a bit torrent, originating from a German FM broadcast. It was an old torrent file, only 2 seeds so it took over a week to download it, but well worth it as this is a rare example of the band's recorded work.

Considering that Zappa was thought to live much of his life under a drug-induced depression, much of his music is "jolly". There are some really good tunes in this work.

heres an album i like by a quartet which was an active working unit for some years.
jimmy lyons of course was a mainstay of cecil taylor's units for 25 or so years.
and im sure that fans who have the ayler box ,are already familiar with the high level of creative empathy produced by this group.

For one of his very infrequent recordings outside of the realm of Cecil Taylor, altoist Jimmy Lyons teams up with the talented jazz bassoonist Karen Borca, bassist Jay Oliver and drummer Paul Murphy for lengthy and rather adventurous versions of "Theme" and "Riffs #1/II" plus the brief "Riffs #1/I" which serves as a prelude to the longer "Riffs." It is always intriguing to hear Lyons stretching out without a piano and this set helped make listeners aware of Borca's brilliant playing on the rarely utilized bassoon.

its hard to go wrong with jimmy lyons, unfortunately on this the recording balance is far from perfect, the sound quality is at times muddy , though its certainly better than that achieved on the mamoth 3 lp set push- pull which i regret having sold because of the poor sound quality.
if anyone has that please post it either here or elsewhere.

this wont dissapoint any lyons fans, despite its technical shortcomings.

Most of these players went onto well-documented careers, but there are two enigmatic characters among them:-Bernie Living, who has a style similar to Kaoru Abe, and George Khan, who, to me, has more than a passing resemblence to Albert Ayler. I think both of these guys became lost to rock - Living was last heard of in a Manfred Mann band, and Khan in a jazz rock group called Sold Gold Cadillac. I can find no trace of either of them after the early 70s. What a waste of talent !

well this concert adds the highly individual approach to the vibraphone of bobby naughton a neglected figure whos contributions to classic leo smith, anthony braxton, and roscoe mitchell albums, to some extent shaped my appreciation of the instrument's possibilities as something other than a merely pianistic approach, ah la say milt jackson.

all i can say about this is that, its a major statement by masters who's names should be in every lover of improvised music's lexicon, this is as great an example of aacm , post 60's free intergrating with euro free improv as one could hope to find, anyone interested in either should on no account overlook this superlative gem.

dickerson deserves to be much better known than he is, having recorded the acknowledged masterpiece "to my queen" in 1963

with andrew hill and andrew cyrille ,he went on to make lots of great records.

the first dickerson album i ever heard was the wonderful trio "life rays" on soul note, again with longstanding collaborators lisle atkinson on bass and master percussionist andrew cyrille on drums.

i thought i did'nt like jazz vibraphone at all until i heard walt's message, and a little later bobby naughton's essential contributions to leo smith's 'go in numbers, he budding of a rose and spirit catcher'.

i had heard gary burton, and later bobby hutcherson and didn't really appreciate them at the time.

Walter Roland Dickerson(born April 16, 1928 or 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a jazz vibraphone player most associated with post-bop.
He graduated from Morgan State University in 1953 and after two years in the Army he settled in California. There he started to gain attention leading a band with Andrew Hill and Andrew Cyrille, but it was his later time in New York City that earned him full notice. In 1962 Downbeat named him the best new artist. In NYC he also worked with John Coltrane and Sun Ra acted as his sideman. From 1965 to 1975 he took a break from jazz, but later he worked again with Andrew Hill and Sun Ra.

there is no dickerson website, fan site and otherwise precious little about him at all.

the wikipedia bio falls short, and even the post bop tag seems an easy catch all.

dickerson is unique and has a very original style, its percussive , luminous and conceptually very abstract.

this is a wonderful concert, the sound quality is superb for the day, (almost soundboard quality).

buy walt dickerson discs, there are now quite a few available on soulnote/blacksaint, prestige/ojc, and steeplechase.

i'd especially recommend, gemini, peace, and life rays.

RICHARD GROSSMAN TRIO 'WHERE THE SKY ENDED' hi there heres some. shit hot free improvised, piano trio music by one of my favourites, richard grossman , a californian resident who died of cancer in 1992. id describe his pianism as , somewhere stylistically between paul bley and howard riley. this is a trio that worked together on and off for nearly 20 years, and the empathy is stunning.

Richard Grossman was born in New York City in 1937, and died of lung cancer in Oct, 1992. He grew up in the South, and began playing jazz piano professionally while still in high school in Philadelphia. In the mid-and late '50's, he was part of the now-legendary Philadelphia jazz scene, working with most of the local players, including Lee Morgan, Jimmy Garrison, Henry Grimes, Odean Pope, Reggie Workman, and many others. His early piano work had been in the post-bop tradition, but, by the late '50's, he was listening to Ornette Coleman, as well as composers like Schoenberg, Webern, Cage, and the European avant-gardists. In1963, Grossman began working with free improvisation. He led the New Music Quintet in 1964-65, and produced the first Philadelphia concert of free jazz in May, 1965. While jazz-based free piano improvisation remained his basic mode of expression, Grossman had a varied musical career, composing tape and electronic music, playing amplified cello, electric bass, vibes, percussion and electric piano in various new music and free jazz contexts. He also led the rock band, "Duck Soup" from 1972-78 in Philadelphia and San Francisco. After 1978, Grossman lived in Los Angeles, playing concerts of solo piano improvisation, and also working in duo, trio and quartet settings with Vinny Golia, Alex Cline, Ken Filiano, John Carter and many other artists n the Nine Winds Records label. Alan has played with all sorts of people in his career, including Stan Tracey, John Mayall, Mike Gibbs, Georgie Fame and Van Morrison. He was a member of the much-acclaimed saxophone trio SOS, along with Surman and Osborne.Sadly, I don't think he has recorded as much as leader as his rich talents deserve. I'd rate him as up there on a level with the top American tenor giants.Nowadays, I suspect being semi-retired, he plays occasional Coltrane tribute gigs, and in the company of veteran British altoist Pete King, Charlie Parker tributes. I was lucky enough to catch one of his Trane gigs a couple of years ago, which was tremendous. I recall a particularly beautiful rendition of Naima.

this one comes to us courtesy of 'glmlr'
who ripped this from his own vinyl, and sent me a copy.
'glmlr' says ' to you, and any other CT lovers who may not have succeeded in finding a copy of this record. It didn't have a wide circulation.
this is a clean rip, the original recording is good,though not state of the art by todays standards.

this one has certainly slipped under the radar,i did see a copy once over 20 years ago alas i was new to the music, and found the prospect of a double album of solo C.T, rather daunting so i passed it up.

this billed in the taylor sessionography as having been released in 1982, pretty much one continuous performance divided into four parts, each filling out one side of an lp.

L.D.LEVY AND RICHARD DAVIS- CAULDRON (CORVO RECS, 1979)

heres one im very pleased to be able to share .

i dont know much about this record at all, and cant find anything out, by checking the web.

L.d levy, who plays bass clarinet, flute and alto sax on this is a real mystery.

i suspect its either a pseudonym , or as glmlr has suggested to me ,that he was a student of richard davis.

richard davis is one of the great virtuosi bassists in the music, some one who has played with everyone from, kenny burrell , andrew hill, eric dolphy ,jaki byard, booker ervin, don freidman to stravinsky .

he also played with many in the post free continuum anthony braxton, steve lacy ,david murray , roscoe mitchell,and beyond, making many great albums of his own as a leader, for muse king records(japan) hep, and diw among them.

jd levy sounds very much like eric dolphy at times on this , and on the whole the project is somewhat reminicent of the alan douglas produced "conversations session" by dolphy in duet with richard davis.

richard davis here plays incredibly freely throughout, and he makes levy sound great, in fact rather than mere support or underpinning, davis provides most of the textural interest on this album.

levy's probably playing out of his skin as a result.

this is ripped from vinyl in good nick, i bought it new though slightly water damaged 23 years ago.

please come forward if you have any info whatsoever ,about either l.d. levy or the session as a whole.

this was released on a lable calling itself "corvo" operating out of milwakee, ive looked hard for info but could come up with only one thing, its listed in richard davis discog.

i think this may well be the only album ever released on corvo.

LA/Bay Area, spoken word; black power poetry by female poet / rapper Roach Om.
Very Rare!!! & collectable private press, past on front cover with a plain white back! No information as too musicians or track titles!!
I brought this about 30 years ago because the backing musicians were rumoured to be the group “Juju” who had recently released “A Message From Mozambique” On Strata East Records, a label that I was seriously into at the time (& still include some of my most played albums today). Unfortunately I have never been able to confirm the rumour, so if there is anyone reading this who worked for United Sound Studio in Berkley CA during the 70’s & has any further info, it would be most appreciated!!

Like all BYG Actuel recordings, the sound quality is not brilliant, but I think it is a good example of the genre. I think this was Terroade's only outing as leader. Jamaican-born, he moved to London when he was fourteen. Internet references indicate that he played with Chris Magregor and cohorts, which probably explains Ronnie Beer's appearance on this album, as well as British artists like John Surman and Mike Osbourne. I've traced one album from this period, Friendship Next Of Kin, which I've seen for sale at 180 euros. He moved to France where he made recordings on BYG with the likes of Sunny Murray, Shepp, Dave Burrell etc. I've found no trace of him after the early 70s, so did he meet an early and untimely death ? hes also on alan silva's lunar surface, and the triple lp celestial communications orchestra.He's also on a few great rock albums, playing flute ..i think..

this has been available, sporadically
as a vinyl only "reissue"of dubious provenance on the abraxas lable.
apparently the owners of 'abraxas' have little respect for the original artists appearing on the discs and they get nothing, which is from what ive heard and read exactly what happened the first time round, yep thats right some of the jazz artists who made records for byg
claim they never even got paid.
In any case this, does seem pretty hard to obtain.

192kbs is pretty low fi, so if you want to enrich the owners of 'abraxas', who make very poorly pressed vinyl reissues, and dont pay any artist royalties, buy the album if you can find it!!!!!!!!!theres a beautiful photo taken by valerie wilmer of terroade in 1971 here

this has been ripped by boromir from his original vinyl, not the abraxas pressing
(i have half a dozen abraxas "reissues" as well as a couple of originals , the originals sound much more vivid, the abraxas pressings have inexplicable pressing faults, and in the case of my copy of jimmy lyons- other afternoons, actual pops and clicks even though the record was new when i bought it and is apparently unmarked, a tape of the same which i made 15 years ago sounds better than that pressing. issues of royalties and legitimacy aside, the music is not being done justice ,by these amateurish vinyl pressings.

You may have this - it's solo piano, a single track of 47 mins "one for dudu", which some people may find too daunting.You may know more about him than I do sotise, but he is perhaps more familiar to people as pianist in King Crimson in the 70s, and for his big orchestral arrangements like Centipede. Long-time married to jazz singer Julie Tippett - formerly Driscoll, whom we all know from Brian Auger Trinity and Wheels Of Fire. There was an example of one of his small group recordings (Nicra - Listen/Hear) posted on jizzrelics blog site a couple of months ago, which I can recommend.

thanks for this one B, i do have it(on tape) and its great, one of his best solo recordings.

as i recall tippett also made a couple of great fusion albums for the vertigo lable in the early seventies, but yeah i know him mostly through his acoustic jazz and free improv records, and ive liked all ive heard.

i confess to rather liking king crimson too, and in some small way albums like "lizard "were an introduction to jazz content one didnt expect on rock albums.

tippetts solo "cat food" may well have been a generations intro to free jazz.

The first charles tyler album i ever heard!

i bought this in an opshop for a couple of dollars when i was first discovering this music in the 1980's

its a lot more arranged, than most of tylers other work, but no worse for that, this features the unique front line combination , of richard dunbars french horn, and tylers baritone sax, on the wonderfully mutant stroll of monks friday the 13th.

FRANK WRIGHT- CHURCH NUMBER NINE(REC 1970, RELEASED IN 1973) LAME

heres a record that deserves a wider hearing.
i feel its one of his best albums(and im not an unreserved fan)
this was originaly issued in a very limited run on a french lable called calumet, only three hundred copies were distributed.

ive ripped this from a cd , presumably the bootleggy black keys reissue ,from the early 2000's.

i can find absolutely no information as to the provenence of this reissue, nor on black keys the presumed lable.

ive checked its availability, and there seems to be no one who has it, although it has occasionably come up for auction on ebay.

forced exposure do not list it.
cd hut, and amazon says its temporarily out of stock, the customary response when they dont have something.

the cd itself contains no clue as to provenance, no lable indicated, no address, no date of reissue, all the hallmarks of a bootleg.
anyone possesing any info ,come forward.

a raft of frank wright's OOP, material has been posted at church number9 the blog, and since ive been sitting on this for a while, i thought id throw it in to compliment those posts.

the personnel on this is the same as that on the classic one for john.

for me its probably bobby few's playing thats most impressive.

I don't know very much about Gress, but he seems to have played all over the place, including in Tim Berne's band, so perhaps this concert was Berne repaying the complement.

The weather's dried up a bit, but more rain is expected tomorrow. Low lying areas are still under threat as the rivers fill up off the hills.

so here it is again, unlikely that this will ever be reissued, the master tapes of this and other I.C.P,releases have apparently been lost.
heres a review by none other than eugene chadbourne.

The name Instant Composers Pool has become synonymous with the extended ensemble of Misha Mengelberg, closely identified with both his compositions and his amusing outlook on life. These associations mean the use of the name in conjunction with this early-'70s recording may wind up hiding a crucial and astonishing document of group improvisation. The German, Dutch, and British scenes come together for this extended piece of music, spilling over two sides and titled simply "Groupcomposing." The players featured are some of the most famous and well respected from these countries, interacting in a hustle bustle of energetic attacks and contrasting moods that is bound to make fans of the European free improvisation scene jump up and down, and why not since the people downstairs are probably already horrified. Some of these listeners, again, think Instant Composers Pool and imagine written charts, somewhat similar to what Willem Breuker cooks up. This album is much more like the acclaimed Topography of the Lungs release from roughly the same era, and in fact that album's three participants are all on hand here: Derek Bailey playing electric guitar with a tone that will make listeners want to raid the fridge, Evan Parker demonstrating how to play frantically and subtly at the same time, and Han Bennink approximating a windstorm on percussion, all fairly well recorded for this period. Mengelberg is also more on the case than he often is in these types of settings — he uses space, but does more than just sit back smoking and watching the others freaking out. Paul Rutherford is great on trombone, and so is the drummer's underrated brother Peter Bennink on both dangerously addled alto saxophone and preposterous bagpipe. Followers of this admittedly very challenging music all have their favorite events where the music just seemed totally inspired, one startling scenario developing after another on-stage. That, boy howdy, is just what this record is like.
