PAUL DUNMALL / STEVE MELLING QUARTET Tribute to Coltrane. 1994

This would have been a gig by the Alan Skidmore Qt. but for some reason Skid couldn't make it and Paul Dunmall agreed to stand in for him.  Although Paul is a massive Coltrane fan it is only recently in his duets with Tony Bianco that he has been concentrating on using his tunes.  So at the time this was an unusual thing for him to be doing.  I think he relished it as much as the audience and the rest of the band did.  Steve Melling, Arnie Somogyi and Mark Taylor couldn't be bettered as a superb rhythm section.  Enjoy!

Er...ok, there's the blurb.  I messed up and had to reupload the files.  I thought I might as well actually LISTEN to the music.....  It's TOTALLY, UTTERLY, WONDERFULLY, WONDERFUL.  The good old Andy cassette recording sounding GOOD.  Turn it up and have a blast.  STUPENDOUS JAZZY JAZZ!!!

PAUL DUNMALL and TONY BIANCO, Cafe Oto

Paul Dunmall and Tony Bianco have recently released two cds of duets dedicated to their love and respect of the music of John Coltrane:  Thank you to John Coltrane and Tribute to Coltrane (Slam).  Last week they took it to London's Cafe Oto in the midst of a heatwave.  Tony Bianco was sweat-soaked from simply setting up his kit.  This man's strength and energy is superhuman.  Paul Dunmall, loving Trane's music so much, raised the temperature even higher with his inspired and impassioned saxophonics.

Big thanks to Gus for his minidisc recording.  Hot stuff indeed.

ELTON

That unique sound played with passion and spirit.  A dear friend.        A good laugh.  Generous and unfazed by anything.  His band-leader skills.  His compositions.  His commitment to free playing.

His Shamanist beliefs.  His encouragement for any good musician he heard and not afraid to tell them.  His flat in Stoke Newington, London, a gathering place and watering hole for musicians and friends for thirty years or more.  His gallery of photographs on the wall, some very faded.  His love of sport and getting high.

Family, friends, musicians - we will all miss him greatly.

Paul Dunmall

Maybe you too were drawn to the jazz spirit by Elton Dean playing with Soft Machine thirty five years ago!  Elton's fabulous solo at the end of Slightly All The Time on Third still sounds fabulous but it never moved me as much as listening to it after learning that he was no longer with us.

Elton Dean only ever sounded like himself, which was always heartfelt and beautiful.  The vitality of this thing we call jazz, improvised music, is so great, so inspiring and so useful that we must embrace and treasure it.

Like any sax player on the scene, Elton recognised Paul Dunmall to be the giant that he is, and once said he thought Mujician was the best band since Coltrane's.  So to play in the grouping presented here with Paul and the superlative Paul Rogers and legendary Tony Levin, I know was special to him.

And the music was happening, like it always did when Elton played.  Everyone plays great and is great.

So please forgive a bit of pre-echo from my cassette and be thrilled by four men reminding us there's a whole other dimension out there!

Thank you Elton.

Great Paul Dunmall is 60 today -- Happy Birthday Paul, and Thank You for the Music!

ELTON DEAN QUINTET - 1995

Hey Miloo, I hadn’t even  bothered to transfer this from cassette to disc because the piano and bass are rather on the quiet side (a bad side-effect of sitting at the front and missing out on the PA).  However, listening to it now it’s not so bad.  Paul Dunmall plays awesomely but lays out on the lovely Dean tune ‘First in the wagon’ where we can hear Elton play as beautifully as only Elton can (or could, I should say).  How sad it is that he has left us, and of course the same with the irreplaceable Tony Levin.  These people came and played for us and opened our minds and our hearts.  So here is a bit more of their legacy to enjoy.

Anyone who has not heard this group on ‘Silent Knowledge’ (Cuneiform 83) should certainly buy the cd to hear them in their full glory.  Also, Elton made a really super duo album with the stupendous Sophia Domancich called ‘Avant ‘ (Hux 063) which should not be missed.

MUJICIAN TRIO. Rare Music Club 14 Aug 1992

Well, it's certainly good to be giving these old recordings an airing.  When bassist Paul Rogers moved to France, Mujician played several gigs as a trio at Keith Tippett's Rare Music Club held at the Malaap Club in Bristol.  Here is a particularly fine session with Paul Dunmall playing C-melody and baritone saxophones.
Great spontaneous music with awesomeness and real beauty.
