Thank you. Gone but not forgotten.
ReplyDeletemaybe he is already playing and yours (ours) Riccardo is recording!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great loss to our civilization, Tchicai was a giant! As I mentioned elsewhere, he took the time in the mid-70s to respond to a fan-letter from the young Bozo. This looks like a great band! Peter Warren was playing some fantastic bass around this time period, and was on some fantastic dates. So let's all enjoy, and give thanks, honors and praise; we're losing too many good ones these days...
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Sean Bergin died about a month ago, a South African who settled in Holland.
ReplyDeleteThx onx.
ReplyDeleteThis was news to me - very sad to hear of his passing.
Sean Bergin too...
:(
Sad news. May he rest in peace. "Ascension", Ayler, Cherry, JCOA bands, Rudd, the Europeans, CT, Gayle etc. etc. He kept good company).
ReplyDeleteJohn Tchicai was one of a kind. Even more - One of Another Kind. Rest in peace, Mr. Tchicai.
ReplyDeleteSad news.Great artist.
ReplyDeleteJohn was part of so many wonderful projects and gave us a lifetime of musical excellence. We can only be thankful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post.

The CD 'Travellers' by John Tchicai with Christopher Dell (vibes), Jonas Westergaard (bass) and Christian Lillinger (drums) is soon to be released on the Jazzwerkstatt label.
ReplyDeleteHere's a concert performance of this quartet, recorded at the festival 'Jazz in E Nr.18' in Eberswalde, Germany, on May 19, 2012 (51 minutes, radio broadcast).

this is a really nice group and music. unfortunately the last track (the G Gruntz) seems to be corrupted.
ReplyDeleteHis spirit Lives on, thanks for this great show!
ReplyDeleteI will check my cd of this recording for the last track.
ReplyDelete@mew23...thanx for your download
ReplyDeletejust got a listen - and not really a joy 'cause of that insensible drumming (Lillinger) over there. Probably the reason for Tchicai's hold back over long parts.
And - thanx Mr. Tchicai for all your great music given to us.
I didn't know this news until I checked your essential blog. Tchicai was a great musician; I think the NYAQ recordings are gems from the mid 60's.
ReplyDeletewas lucky to see him play many times...he was a giant...he was music...a true great
ReplyDeletehe was cutting edge his whole career...from nyaq, coltrane, don cherry 60's free jazz to williamsburg downtown 21st century
rip roi
i'll miss you
cheers
I just heard the sad news this afternoon. I was hoping you would offer a tribute. I look forward to sitting down with this soon. Despite the blue situation I appreciate your sharing this. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteVery sad knews, he was one of the first artists who taught me that freer music was just as good as the hard bop I was much more familiar with. I still have the tape I copied from a mates dad of "John Tchicai with Strange Brothers" twenty plus years ago, how time passes
ReplyDeleteRIP John, and thanks for posting this recording
ReplyDeleteTchicai made a significant mark on modern jazz. Sadly, most Americans know little of his work.
ReplyDeleteActually the last two tracks are defective. (Notice flapping sound throughout is not the drummer.)
This was a beautiful concert. Hopefully someone will post a better rip of it...
Great recording, but try as I might I have not been able to correct the last track either. Just a heads up.
ReplyDeleteI'll check it tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteMiss you!
T
Many thanks for taking the time to fix the show. It is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThe Willisau Jazz Archive lists this band in 1971 as "THE NAKED HAMLET MUSIC ENSEMBLE." In 1972, Leon Francioli had taken the bass chair. They even have the original poster art there! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great show, whenever it took place! Thank you! Favre could almost pass for Sunny Murray in places! Thilo (who passed away a year prior to the original post here) and Tchicai had quite the empathy...
