Reform Art Unit with Ram Chandra - Yen Goku

I just had the new that Fritz Novotny passed away yesterday (I see now that the new has already been spread).
I dont know if Reform Art Unit will go on, but it won't be the same without him and Sepp Mitterbauer. They never care much about selling but more about making music, so they have so many buried records, here is one.

Fritz Novotny November 21, 1940 - May 7, 2019

This morning I learned the sad news of the death of Mr Fritz Novotny who was the founding member of the Reform Art Unit and musicians in many others bands like Three Motions, Clan Music Overdrive, Reform Art West or Acting Seven + various others records with Paul Fields.
The R A U if not the most popular free jazz band in europe was cult for many people. Mr Novotny, Sepp Mitterbauer and all of the founding members of this collective who have left this planet the years before were incredible musicians in the fact that they were able of a synthesis between so many styles of music from the contemporary classical music of the 20th century to some oriental traditions. Many renowned musicians have played with the R A U: Burton Greene, Evan Parker, Sunny Murray, Linda Sharrock, Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, Clifford Thornton, Jim Pepper to name a few.

Over the years we have posted many hard to find recordings of the R A U and crew. Ernst and also particularly Corvimax have made some important contributions.
For those who would like to get some physical recordings, there are always few for sale on Discogs, I think that Milo Fine still have some copies of the Reform Art West box set and Impro Jazz perhaps still have very few goodies but most are gone for good.
Thank you Mr Novotny for this great music who have inspired some of us.

As a tribute here is a cd from the period when the band turned his music into the contemporary classical direction, this cd have been recorded in 1998.

PAUL DUNMALL - DUNS LIMITED EDITION re-ups

I have re-upped links for the complete Duns Limited Edition catalogue.  Paul Dunmall's project to create his own cdr label was most prolific - releasing 67 sessions between 1999 and 2009, greatly aided by Philip Gibbs. He usually produced batches of 50 per title. I posted these here five years ago but the links were mostly dead.  Scroll down the comments to find the new ADrive links. The first seven are out of chronological order as they were initially held back.

Paul is very happy to share his music.

It Is Good To Take But It Is Also Good To Give

The music that we post here are downloaded several dozen times by many followers. So be kind to check sometimes the request section at

and jump to « newest » to see the more recent request of re-post and provide the files requested when you have them. We have regular followers and Im’ sure that they have most of the music posted here during those recent years, so take your chance to give to someone else what you have taken here. The original poster have not always kept the file or sometimes have to rip it again, so help us when you can. Few followers have done an incredible job of re-post, but the adventure could be more collective in my opinion.

VARIOUS "JAZZ ASPEKTE" (NOVA, 1973-75)

This is a rather unusual release for the German Democratic Republic.
Generally the label NOVA was for contemporary classic, entertainment and experimental releases.
But for some reason the music on this LP was not issued on the label AMIGA which had a series called AMIGA Jazz.
Further I would like to point out that the given bassist for track B2 is most likely not Blazeowsky but Christoph Niemann.
Niemann is credited for this role on all three editions of the LP which was solely reserved for FEZ (AMIGA 8 55 585, 1978).  And the title which is included on this LP is the same as on the FEZ LP/CD.

Not only was this a minor bummer but also the music played here by the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Berlin. Nothing wrong with it for sure but as NOVA was a label reserved also for experimental music I expected something more at the margins. But expectations aren't necessarily the best guide for enjoyment. So have fun as I had after I've accepted what's on this disc ;-)

And finally here's a request. The only other recording by FEZ is on an LP released in 1979 by the
Czechoslovakian label OPUS. The festival sampler "Bratislavské Džezové Dni 1976" contains more than 15 minutes of an otherwise unavailable composition by this special group.

Gumpert's trio and the ensemble of Hubert Katzenbeier (here not on trombone!) are in fine form - as expected....

UPCOMING + RECENT RELEASES XVII

The above picture belongs to a proposed vinyl edition of this 1966/67 recording.
The line-up is Hugh Steinmetz on trumpet, Franz Beckerlee on altosax, Bo Thrige Andersen, Steffen Andersen on drums and bass and not at least Niels Harrit on singing saw.
Maybe not so famous as they deserve. But no other than Sunny Murray did a recording with this guys in 1965.

First release of this great music was in 2005 on Atavistic.
But this time it would be reissued on vinyl.
This depends on how many music lovers would express their serious interest in helping to fund it.

So anyone who's willing to bet on it is invited to help the fundraising.

ELTON DEAN'S NiNESENSE - Bracknell Jazz Festival 1978

I got this audience recording in trade from many years ago and I shared it previously in comments to some other Ninesense recording here. Recently I gave it a listen and found it wholly enjoyable and great preformance, thus I tried some equalisation from original mp3@320. In the end it is improvement I think. Setlist is similiar to 100 Club Concert from 1979. Track 5 (including 11 min of great improv) has significantly clearer sound without audience noises (which are quietly enjoyable during quiet passages earlier) and due to possible speaker entry in the fade out, it can come from some broadcast (possibly) from different concert, but I got it together with this Bracknell recording).

WMWM - Live At The BBC 1973

The year 1973 was decisive in Robert Wyatt’s career, more and more attracted by the vocal and taking a distance with the more experimental aspect of the prog, he was already thinking about a solo career when the accident of June 1st which will let him paraplegic rush things. However it is during the first semester of this same year that WMWM was born whose music is exclusively improvised and almost totally instrumental. Apparently this group sounds like a contradiction to the trajectory that Wyatt's career already seemed to take, but in fact we must understand this group as a sort of carelessness, as some moments of the prog have been some years before. If the accident of Robert Wyatt marks the end of an era, the last act of a period of recklessness that will this time have tragic consequences, this accident is probably not the cause of the short existence of this group. Without the fatal date of June 1, WMWM was in any case not promised to have a future as the musical differences seem obvious, especially between Gary Windo and Dave McRae. Yet it's with both that Wyatt wanted to play and this is what makes the group's interest: Windo crazy and uncontrollable, Mc Rae significantly more structured and reinforced in this posture by Ron Mathewson very inventive and sublime . Wyatt meanwhile is a bit like in "The End Of A Ear" alternating construction and demolition of the rhythm.
This post was made possible with the contribution of Propylaen2001 who provided almost all the recording of the performance given for the BBC apparently on April 4, 1973. I added the end that was missing and the first note of the saxophone in the beginning.
There is an improvisation in two parts to which I did not give titles because a complete confusion reigns around the titles of the two parts. First named "Caramus" and "Spiderman", their order appears as such on the album "Anglo American" by Gary Windo which contains edit of the performance, but the two parts have been reversed. On the version provided by Propylaen2001, the first part of the improvisation is named "Toddler" and the second "Caramus".
If you compare the second part of this recording with the version available on the album "Anglo American" you will find that the pitch of this version is a little higher. In fact for reasons of space the officially released version has not only been edited but also accelerated but that it does not get the pitch has been lowered. I preferred to leave the pitch of this version as it is because it is consistent with the first part.
There is another recording from this band where Mathewson is replaced by Richard Sinclair, of course I recommend it.
Obviously the band have also done one concert in trio without Gary Windo

Joseph Jarman - winds (alto sax, bass flute, flute, shawm), percussion
Leroy Jenkins - violin
Myra Melford - piano, harmonium

acoustic performance (no PA amplifiction used)

Some more Joseph Jarman coming up. This is a trio setting, wholly acoustic, without any backup from bass and regular drums, except the occasional percussion. Leroy Jenkins is a veteran of the AACM, notably for his long engagement with the Revolutionary Ensemble. Myra Melford is a pianist with a diverse background in classical music as well as jazz and blues and as can be heard from this performance, went to India and learnt to play the harmonium.

Together they weave a tapestry of chambre-like intimacy naeatly summarised in this review: The through-composed nature of much of the material along with the spare instrumentation contributes to a delicate chamber-like feel, but it’s balanced by an unusual, folksy strain of tranquillity; equally beautiful, hearty and fragile, all at once. See https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/equal-interest-equal-interest.

We'll have some more from this ensemble later on.

Masahiko Satoh - Pavane Lachrymae - Denon 1978

Several years ago I interviewed Masahiko Satoh, probably for the french magazine "impro jazz". One of my first questions was about the incredible diversity of styles he has been playing since the beginning of his career. He then replied, "I have no particular style, when I started to play to win money, the first band I played with, was a jazz band, if it had been a tango band I will become a tango pianist. Reality or casualness of the answer?
