Dreamtime live at the Red Rose, London, 2001

Here's another one of "psykies'" offerings, recorded by BBC Radio 3's "Jazz on Three" in 2001. Dreamtime was originally a trio, dating back to the early 1980s. From their web site:

Dreamtime began in London in 1982 when Nick Evans, Gary Curson and Jim Le Baigue met in a friend's basement in order to 'work out'. The raw intensity of the trio's improvisations, together with the haunting themes borne out of the interaction between the three musicians' differing styles demanded that a working band be formed and the trio became a quintet with the addition of trumpet player Jim Dvorak and bass player Roberto Bellatalla. As a quintet Dreamtime recorded the album Bunny Up in 1983 for Affinity Records. The quintet maintained a weekly residency at a London club and rapidly expanded its repertoire before augmenting to a sextet with the addition of pianist Keith Tippett.

Few bands confound the stereotyped expectations aroused by the words 'free improvisation' as thoroughly as Dreamtime. Most radically, they utilise structure to a far greater extent than might be expected from musicians with their track records; they also draw freely on an extraordinary diversity of traditions, from Tibetan and Native American chants to African and Chinese music. But, perhaps most importantly, they surprise those who expect improvised music to be sternly esoteric and inaccessible by imbuing everything they play with a highly affecting brand of fierce joy—Chris Parker, The Times

I can only subscribe to what's said above. They also have a cd out, Zed Fish, and from what I can gather, is still an ongoing proposition. They played the Vortex in August 2014 with a slightly different line-up from what you can hear here.  By the way, a visit to London is not complete unless you have checked into the Vortex or Cafe Oto, which is within walking distance, both in the Dalston area of East London. I can vouch for the place, friendly hosts, nice clientele and some fine locally made beer. The Red Rose in Finsbury Park is, alas, no more.

Nick Evans - trombone
Gary Curson - saxophone
Keith Tippett - piano
Roberto Bellatalla - bass
Jim Le Baigue - drums

Introduction is by Jez Nelson. On a small note, there is another rendition here of "Traumatic Experience", a Harry Miller tune, which you can also hear played by the Dedication Orchestra, posted here a little while ago.

As always, enjoy!

NOTES
Recorded by me off air direct from the original live broadcast to a Panasonic Hi-Fi VHS video recorder in SP audio only mode. Sometime in the mid to late 1990's I misguidedly transferred all my radio recordings to VHS LP audio mode. This combined with the age of the tapes has resulted in some evident distortion throughout.

here is an intergalactic suite by evans, partially composed and partially imrovised, all dedicated to Alice Coltrane: it's in alleged three parts, but it's all a matter of personal opinions where these three parts could start and finish, as it all sounds the same for 50 and more minutes... "DEK- featuring Didi Kern (drums), Elisabeth Harnik (piano), and Ken Vandermark (reeds)- is a trio that creates music which displays the impact that improvisation, new composition, and the genres of rock, funk, and afrobeat have on each other. First established in September of 2014, the group has worked together on a regular basis in Europe, and will release their first album on the Trost label in 2016; a year which will feature performances by the band in New York City during Vandermark's Stone residency during January, in Milwaukee as part of the Option Milwaukee series, and during an extensive tour of Europe in October."

Interesting piano / drum duo with Irène Schweizer and Joey Baron at the 2015 Zürich Unerhört Festival. Schweizer reaches deep into jazz piano tradition for a sequence of energetic improvisations - quite different from the abstraction of a Taylor / Oxley meeting, for example.

The Dedication Orchestra live in Crawley, UK, 1992

We have received a bundle of files from "psykies", initially uploaded to the Dime torrent site. They have in common that they were all recorded from radio, specifically jazz broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, from the late 1980s to the beginning of the 2000s. We plan to post these recordings in the time to come.

Starting from the top, as it were, this is the Dedication Orchestra from a concert at the Outside In Festival, The Hawth Centre, Crawley, England on September 5 1992. The Dedication Orhestra is a huge ensemble conceived as a tribute to the South Africans that made up the Blue Notes and the Brotherhood of Breath, expats coming to Europe in the mid-60s after realising that an interracial band was impossible to combine with living in apartheid South Africa.

No, we are not going to hear the cd pictured above, but we are going to hear what's on the cd. The concert is an exact replica of the tracks on the cd, played in the same sequence, too. The post came with no track listings, but after comparing the concert with the studio-recorded cd, what we hear is as follows:

1. Traumatic experience/Ithi Gqi
2. B my dear
3. Dancing Damon
4. Hug pine
5. Andromeda
6. Manje
7. Sonja/Introduction to you ain't gonna know me/You ain't gonna know me 'cause you think you know me
8. Woza/Traumatic experience (reprise)

Track separation differs a little from the cd, because some pieces run together.

Cast of characters:

Kenny Wheeler - trumpet, fluglehorn
Jim Dvorak - trumpet, fluglehorn
Lance Kelly - trumpet, fluglehorn
Claude Deppa - trumpet, fluglehorn
Radu Malfatti - trombone
Dave Amis - trombone
Paul Rutherford - trombone
Malcolm Griffiths - trombone
Dave Powell - tuba
Lol Coxhill - saxophone
Elton Dean - saxophone
Ray Warleigh - saxophone
Alan Skidmore - saxophone
Evan Parker - saxophone
Chris Biscoe - saxophone
Neil Metcalfe - flute
Django Bates - tenor horn
Keith Tippett - piano
Paul Rogers - bass
Louis Moholo - drums
Phil Minton - vocals
Francine Luce - vocals

SCOTT / STiVíN / DAŠEK - Rozhovory (Supraphon 1981)

For all lovers of Rudolf Dašek, Jiří Stivín (both previously worked in duo named System Tandem) and veteran American clarinetist and saxophonist Tony Scott, who frequently visited Czechoslovakia during 70's and 80's. Moody and introspective trios were recorded in 1978, but not released until 1981. Rip is still a bit crunchy, although I repaired a huge number of clicks.

Stockhausen Festival, Munich, 21 - 25 October 2015

Munich saw a different kind of Oktoberfest this year, with a five day Stockhausen festival, much of which was broadcast by BR-Klassik's Horizonte programme.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard played the first eleven Klavierstücke in concerts spread across the festival; I really like these performances, as they are played in a way which (to my ears), makes a strong connection to the piano music of Messiaen and Boulez. Apart from X, from which there are two substantial extracts, all the other pieces were broadcast in their entirety.

In addition, there are really excellent performances of three other pieces;

Kontakte (22 October)
Pierre- Laurent Aimard (piano)
Dirk Rothburst (percussion)
Marco Stroppa (klangregie / sound direction)

Zyklus (22 October)
Dirk Rothburst (percussion)

Hymnen (23 October?)
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Paul Jeukendrup (klangregie / sound direction)
Conductor - Peter Eötvös

With a bit of luck, the other pieces at the festival, including Mantra, might be either broadcast or released. It would be great to hear from people who were able to attend any of these concerts, or indeed any of the performers.

Evan Parker - solo - Sant'Anna Arresi - 1st September 2015

Here's a transcendental solo performance by Evan Parker, from earlier this year at Santa'Anna Arresi, broadcast a few days ago by RAI3.

This is down-sampled from a hi-res recording I made of the broadcast, and if there's sufficient interest, I can post that - much larger files, however.

DAM - Radio broadcast 1986

PAUL DUNMALL - tenor saxophone
TONY MOORE - double-bass
DAVE ALEXANDER - drums

1. 22:46

BBC Radio 3.  Jazz Today.  Broadcast 16 June 1986

I saw this trio once.  I'd seen Paul at a gig in Birmingham and he said they were going to be playing at the Oporto in London.  So, when the time came, I went down to check them out.  As I remember, the London streets were busy, busy, the tubes were packed, but when I got to the downstairs room at the Oporto pub there was loooads of space and maybe half a dozen people.  The music though was very busy, almost overwhelmingly so to ears relatively new to this sort of thing. Intense and extremely exciting.

I'm guessing I missed the start of taping this off the radio, and for some reason didn't record the dulcet tones of the great Charles Fox, which might have helped.  Paul can't find his tape of the broadcast, so unless someone else can come up with more completeness - this is all there is.  Check out some fabulous stopping and starting near the beginning.  Both Tony Moore and Dave Alexander have never really got the recognition they deserve.
