Wayne Horvitz European Orchestra ~ BimHuis ~ 4th October 2014
A very interesting set from the Wayne Horvitz European Orchestra, exploring the full scale, range and colour of the instrumentation, and making a strong case for free music rooted in big band and swing. Definitely one to return to frequently.
Another great broadcast from the Italian radio station RAI3, one of the most interesting broadcasters of jazz & improvised music.
Wadada Leo Smith Golden Quartet / Roscoe Mitchell & Mike Reed Duet - Théâtre du Châtelet, 19th October 2015
Here's a recording from France Musique of a concert earlier this week at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the AACM. Two sets, the first from Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet, and the second a duet between Roscoe Mitchell and Mike Reed. Thoroughly excellent, especially the blistering performance by Roscoe Mitchell.
I've not done much editing into separate pieces, mainly because the radio presenter speaks over the intro and outro, and at various times to remind the radio audience who is playing. It's only a minor distraction however.

EUROPÄISCHE JAZZNACHT FÜSSEN "1993/1994/1995 TEIL 1"
The "König Ludwig Lied" is a traditional song which came up shortly after the mysterious death of king Ludwig II from Bavaria.
Lyrics vary sometimes - occaisonally with a strong incriminating political content.
But it is also a quite 'kitschy' song which has also connotations to a superficial view of Bavaria and its history/customs.

HOHE UFER KONZERTE + 1 (1976/77)

I got this rip through a kind trader - THANK YOU!! - and I post it as I've received it (only a tiny bit of manual declicking).
Here is a loose translation of the cover's text:
"The "alta ripa" group (Günter Christmann, Johannes Goebel and Gunter Lage) was formed to create a place in Hannover, were they could be presented unusual forms of dance, theater, text, new music, improvisation, new jazz a.o.
In cooperation with the Hannoverschen Künstlerverein and with the help of the ministry of science and arts [region of Niedersachsen - in the nothern part of Germany], monthly Hohe Ufer concerts were held in the historical museum of Hannover.
Parts of the program were held also in three other cities.
The surprising success of the presentation gave the motive for the publication of this LP."
The last piece "Tanka" is from another LP - probably released by the city of Langenhagen, which is located near Hannover.
The lyrics on track 4 are from the german painter Kurt Schwitters.
His activites were far broader than only painting - dada, surrealism, poetry, sound, sculpture, graphic design, typography and installation art. Most famous he is for his collages called "Merz Pictures".

Fontana 1966/1990
My friend feels this is a very special record, with which I can only concur as I've said elsewhere. This entire Phillips series ,was briefly reissued (for about 2 minutes) in Japan, first on vinyl in the early eighties and then cd for even less time in the early 90's. Those are now very high ticket items which I certainly cant afford. When will larger lables ever learn that there is a market for this stuff? I'd be the first to replace worn vinyl and rips from same, but I'm sure as hell not prepared to fork out up to USD 150 for a used cd.
Just to add briefly to the last paragraph, the files are from the 1990 cd.

YAQUB MALIK "YAQUB SPEAKS" (THE HOUSE OF YAQUB, 1980)
Yaqub Malik (formerly Mack Spears) .... who at 19 was chosen as the successor to Charlie Parker & shared the stage with Bud Powell, Duke Jordan, Elmo Hope & even the legendary Miles Davis....
About six years ago I got this rip from another blog. I don't remember from where. Probably it was El Reza's old blog.
But this rip is in flac (I checked it) and not in mp3.
However - thanks to the original uploader and for the LP rip.
Two weeks ago I visited a friend in Potsdam (near Berlin). During the two days of my visit he got the LP.
We listened to it and I've again enjoyed especially the first track on side A.
But the whole LP is thoroughly enjoyable. This is how I was reminded about the files on my pc.
I've removed manually a few clicks and one heavy point of blasting - that's it.
More info about Malik Yaqub you'll find here and here. Some more in Spanish here and here.

JULiE DRiSCOLL - 1969 (Polydor 1971)
This remarkable album was reissued on CD third times, but none of it is recently available. Earliest One Way Records version sounded poor, next issue on Disconforme seems fine to me sonically - I prefer it before latest release on Eclectic Disc (I was hoping in another issue on their succesors Esoteric Recordings, but they seems to have different preferences). So here is Disconforme sound with scans of Eclectic Disc booklet w/liner notes by Sid Smith and song lyrics.
Not as much avant jazz, but really experimental songwriting. And first meeting of Julie and Keith Tippett, I can strongly recommend also their latest song based project - Nostalgia 77 Sessions feat. Keith and Julie Tippett on Thru Thougts label.

Large Ensemble, with William Parker ~ Homage to Butch Morris ~ Sant'Anna Arresi ~ 3rd September 2015
From a live RAI3 broadcast last night from Sant'Anna Arresi, here is the Large Ensemble with William Parker as guest on exotic reeds(!). There are echoes from many different elements of American and European free & improvised music, but also voices, timbres and rhythms that seem new, and which build towards a propulsive force in the final section. The encore is quite different, and equally interesting. I listened to the broadcast and was enthralled, and will spend more time with this over the next few weeks to listen to it properly - its depth, density and intensity demand that.

GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA "BERLINER JAZZTAGE, 1970"
Several weeks ago I was doing research for some liner-notes. Eagerly searching for information also at the www I came across a book called "Postserielle Musik und Free Jazz" by Hans Kumpf.
The contents of the book did not help in my search. But I encountered some informations (and a score) of Manfred Schoof's "Ode".
Luckily I found the music in the collection of a friend who generously send me the files.
"Ode" never was available officially although it seems to be a rather important piece of music for the development of German (European) Free Jazz.
Schlippenbach's "Globe Unity 70" is or better was available through Atavistic.
Seemingly it's OOP at the moment - therefore I left it for your enjoyment.
The title of Brötzmann's tune "Drunken in the Morning Sunrise" reminded me about the circumstances for the recording sessions of "Machine Gun".
Brötzmann and Buschi Niebergall went - after the first part of the session - for some beers.
Eventually they took shelter for a nap at a building lot. Next morning Niebergall and Brötzmann woke up, had a mouthful of beer and went back to the "Lila Eule" for the second part of their recording session......
