Paul Bley & Anette Peacock- Dual Unity 1972
This one goes out to Brother H, by way of potential inspiration!
A pioneer of the use of Synths in Jazz, along with Sun Ra , Burton Green , and Masahiko Satoh....
Bley made several recordings with Peacock in this lyrical spacey free style, this is very similar territory to the better known , America lp, Improvisie-(AM6121),
More concise, and probably heavily edited from longer live performances , this has the added bonus of featuring more of Annette Peacocks , distinctive voice, seemingly pitched somewhere between , insouciant bored irony , and heartbroken agony...that voice,so deceptively sensuous often evokes a certain detached unexpected froideur, like the abrupt sinking feeling of being sexually rejected, by someone you thought was warmly inviting seduction.... and later perhaps finding out , the said object of desire got off on your humiliation.
Bleys incredible solo on Gargantuan encounter, is a marvel ,threatening to recklessly career out of control and fly off the rails into some bottomless abyss.. hell of a ride,
ripped from a friends well worn copy years ago , its last reissue on cd was in Japan ,2 decades ago...
would be great to be able to buy a Bley produced cd of further contemporaneous live material in this vein!

JOHN CARTER "ECHOES FROM RUDOLPH'S" (IBEDON, 1976+'77)
Recently I had the chance to buy a mint copy of a LP I've never heard about.
After listening to it I thought to share it with you - hope you don't mind my helpless efforts to make a picture from the front. My scanner won't work and the winter-light in Germany doesn't really help.
So you have the cover including the flash - which I tried to dim out with my finger...
Not at least this recording shows again the mastery of John Carter - recommended listening.
Cove photoshopped by wightdj - Thank you!!

LOUiS MOHOLO-MOHOLO - London Jazz Festival 2010
This was drummer's 70th Birthday Special concert at LJF 2010 in two sets. First set reunited Louis with Keith Tippett under the title of their 1982 FMP album No Gossip, second set presented him with special version of his Unit. I recorded the broadcast off the BBC i-player and kept the whole sequence with announcements and interview, given in the afternoon before the concert. For various reasons it took me almost 3 years to prepare it for posting, so at last here it is. All the best in 2014 to all.

The sound quality of this recording is considered too poor to become an Incus release, but Derek's partner Karen has kindly given her blessing for this piece of history to be shared and enjoyed for what it is.

Stan Tracey-Louis Moholo-live in Novara Italy 2006
Here's another great Stan Tracey Broadcast , originally taped and shared by Dimer Survivor69 (many thanks to him), a duo with Louis Moholo , in beautiful crystal clear sound , again largely freely improvised, though i have a suspicion that the last piece is a blue notes tune, but i cant quite nail it !
A marvellous show which at times strongly evokes Moholo's Masterful FMP duo with Keith Tippett.
ENJOY!

Gunter Hampel and Jeanne Lee-Oasis 1979
Here's another great Horo record , a truly magnificent testament to the love Hampel and Lee must have had for each other when they did this . To Me this is.another one of those records where one feels one is eavesdropping on an intimate ,private, at times sexually charged conversation ... it feels very much as though they are playing to and for each other ...Lee's scatting even sounds like love smitten baby talk on a few tracks ..
Joyous , Wonderful Music, which doesn't deserve to languish in obscurity on the musty shelves of 'specialist" collectors.

Stan Tracey-Mike Osborne Original 1972
Here's a further commemorative tribute to to the late great Stan Tracey, in a duo setting with equally legendary saxophonist Mike Osborne.. recorded in 1971 for Cadillac , Ogun also released a collaboration between the two, 'Tandem' in 1977.
This features Tracey in seldom heard completely free modality, something he returned to later in life in a fabulous series of duets with Evan Parker , which are available(and whole heartedly recommended!) on Parker's Psi ,label .
This was transferred some years ago from a friends quite battered copy , the low res covers are from discogs.
no eq, compression or digi syrup employed, sweeten to taste!
Enjoy!

Stan Tracey at the BBC 1978 - 1982
To follow up our previous posting below, here is some truly vintage jazz to commemorate the passing away of Stan Tracey on 6 December at the age of 86. We have selected to hone in on recordings done for BBC radio in the late 70s and the early 80s. At this point he kept a regular quartet which sometimes was contracted into a trio and other times expanded into a sextet, octet and even a full orchestra. For this post, we have two quartets and a trio with a slight variation in line--up as his son Clark Tracey came to replace Bryan Spring on drums. And for a contrast, I've thrown in a batch of the full Orchestra doing a superb set of Ellington covers.

WALTER ZIMMERMANN "LOKALE MUSIK" (Edition Theater am Turm, 1977 - 1981)
Walter Zimmermann (born Schwabach, Germany, April 15, 1949) is a German composer associated with the Cologne School.
Zimmermann studied composition in Germany with Werner Heider and Mauricio Kagel, the theory of musical intelligence at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht (now located in The Hague), and computer music at Colgate University in New York.
Zimmerman's works are infused by a personal adaptation of minimal technique. Whereas many early American minimalist composers were influenced in their works by rock, jazz, and world musics, Zimmermann has drawn a great deal of inspiration from his Franconian heritage. A number of his works, particularly his groups of pieces known as Lokale Musik, use the traditional music of this area as source material. These works frequently begin with melodic material derived from Franconian folk songs, which are rearranged and transformed in novel ways.
In 1976, Zimmermann published a collection of interviews with American musicians and composers entitled Desert Plants: Conversations With 23 American Musicians. (source: Wikipedia)
See also his own webside - recommended readings...here.
If you like this music I urge you to buy CDs from him. Especially a new recording on Mode Records were parts of this LP are presented in new interpretations. Very fine version of "10 Fränkische Tänze" with two string quartets. One playing the composition presented here plus a quartet playing a drone.
Also another recent release on Maria de Alvears label World-Edition which has four works with greater ensembles/orchestra.
Lokale Musik - local music.
A kind of anti-"world-music" but sublimated, substituted, transformed and "transcended" as Walter Zimmermann has put it in the description of the four parts from "Leichte Tänze" (airy dances but also "easy").
Some rough translations/explanations by the custodian of the fountain :
Kärwamelodien - "Kärwa" means in franconian dialect church anniversary but also country/parish fair.
Wolkenorte - "Wolken" means clouds and "Orte" means place/location/site/scene/lieu.
Riuti: hard to translate - refers to the landscapes of wine cultivation.
Wüstungen und Rodungen - also hard to explain (for me) - a "Wüstung" refers to a settlement or an agraic area which was abandoned before the modern times (ca.16th century), but is still remembered in field-names, old charters/documents, in local oral tradition/lore.
"Rodungen" connotes to the clearing/uprooting of an area for farming purposes.
The word "Rodung" is also related to the term "ausrotten" - to extirpate or to eradicate.
Keuper: shell limestone - a geological formation and a form of soil which is characteristic for the franconian wine district.
Ländler: a slow dance in the beat of 3/4.
Phran + Topar: no clue at all on my side...
Streichglasspiel - an instrument made of glass which is (gently) bowed (also with the fingers).
Stille Tänze - silent dance(s).
Namenlose Zwiefache: "Namenlos" means simply nameless and "Zwiefache" is a fast south-german folk dance which alternates constantly between a spinning/rotating movement and a waltz-like dance.
And finally - "Der Tanz und der Schmerz" - dance and pain/sorrow.
Lokale Music is a landmark, not only as a remarkable body of music, but as a model of a composing as a project that connects the musical to the historical, ethnological, social and psychological, and one in which these connections are never musically trivial.

ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH NONET "KÖLN 1969"
Only 23 days later Schlippenbach recorded his LP "The Living Music".
Except Paker and Bailey the line-up was the same as for this broadcast. The actual LP "The Living Music" might be one of the most often re-issued recordings of Free Jazz.
First there was an edition on A.v.Schlippenbach's 'Quasar' imprint. Than the more widely distributed FMP 0100. A CD on John Corbett's Unheard Music Series. And finally a re-release on LP through Cien Fuegos in 2013.
