Steve Lacy/Kent Carter-Catch,(Horo (It)HZ08,LP) 1977

The latest in our out of print Lacy series , not exactly a Personal favourite, rather a perfectly pleasant intimate duo session with Kent Carter ,Lacys regular bassist for a dozen or so years.
Nice moments , including some rare tunes(Hex,Vow) Which don't seem to have been otherwise recorded .

 So certainly not a desultory effort by any means , just a little unremarkable in an  under powered /or lacking energy kind of way ... I'm glad i heard it without paying the big bucks for which it sells at auctions...

This is not my rip , so thanks again to LeMo ,from Sfrp who posted this some years ago!

Steve Lacy-Points, Le Chant du Monde LP (F)LDX74680-1978

There have been a few requests for this over the years, a fine record from 1978, long out of print, which opens with a stunning Version of Ellingtons the Mooche, which as recorded by Sydney Bechet in 1941, apparently was the catalyst for Lacy finally dedicating himself to the Soprano saxophone
and the Arrangement is not light years removed from the original , apart from a few trade mark whole tone scales..
although at first it seems rather clunky ,somehow the spare less effusive treatment , gives the great tune a more distant  outer worldly character, lacy seems for a few fleeting moments in his solo to directly quote Bechets own ... the blues feeling of which is almost completely erased , the Blues was never a huge influence on lacys repertoire , Potts touches on those aspects very effectively.

Pot Pourri the second piece is a brief solo medley , and one of the few times in his entire discography where Lacy directly references John Coltrane, by quoting  Tranes arrangement of my favourite things , as everyone knows Lacy's Soprano saxophone playing ,inspired Coltrane in much the same way Bechet inspired him , with very different results,some of which have had baleful dire consequences on players of the instrument ever since .


The rest is the band in gloriously fulsome free mode , including the 3 very fine at times explosive Potts/Lacy duets which make up the 3 points suite, Potts is so great on this ,every bit as engagingly inventive as Lacy ,often Upstaging him.... what a wonderful under appreciated , under recorded master saxophonist!


All in All a typically wonderful session from this period

Yoshizawa and Togashi truly are Lacy's masterful peers here,matching his most provocative textural explorations in an astonishing counterpoint ,the three floating together as they sculpt the void..with an elasticity that seems unique to Lacy's Japanese Collaborations!

Yesterday I announced I had a Mountainscape set.  However, I had made this statement without having my notes ready and in the evening, trying to retrace that CD, I found I couldn't locate it.  I even began to doubt my memory: 'Had I really recorded any Mountainscapes or was I just imagining this?'  'Had I just misalaid or lent it and never bothered to get it back?'
What I did come up with, is this set (a double set, actually) which was - I think - originally seeded by Peter Losin, about a year back.
Journal Violone was - at first - a solo project by Barre which started out in 1968 as literally a kind of bass diary.  Journal Violone II was a trio effort, recorded by ECM and released in 1979. It somehow bridges the earlier trio-work (never on ECM) and the experimental work of Mountainscapes/Three Day Moon and the more vocal-oriented work on 'Music by Barre Phillips' (sadly never released on CD).
This seed is culled from two radio performances which are definitely not complete, but this is how it was originally seeded. The first session is interrupted rather abruptly during the applause but one can hear Barre tuning his bass and ready to go into another part.  Maybe more of this will be unnearthed one day?

In 1977, the Steve Lacy Quintet was invited to West-Berlin to take part in the Workshop Freie Musik, lasting from 7.4.77 to 11.4.77. So for this concert in East-Berlin, the band apparently made a little excursion when having a day off from the Workshop.

It was during this festival, more precisely on the last day, that they recorded the beautiful "Follies"-LP for FMP/SAJ. There's also a short radio broadcast recording from 8.4.1977 circulating (sounding seriously lo-fi!).

Here's another to me rather Special lp on MPS, Lee Konitz ,and Martial Solal ,two masters with a long shared performance and recording History.

I've always felt that they played down some of their most adventurous music together..

this one is outrageously good, they run the gamut from straight Bop compositions based on standards to free improvisations ,the title track is a piece played in four Different keys,simultaneously..

N.H.O.P , and a young J.Scofield are equal participants and round off one of the great ones in the Solal /Konitz shared discography.
still out of print to my knowledge , and very worthwhile

Lee Konitz has apparently not been well lately , having been hospitalised just before a sheduled appearance at the Melbourne jazz Festival in June this year.

I have no idea whether he has fully recovered , perhaps a reader who is more au courant can fill us in .

Eliane Radigue - Adnos I - III

Here is a spectacular item from the late and lamented Table of the Elements record label. It is getting increasingly hard to come by and hence more and more expensive, unfortunately. There are some rips of Adnos floating around on the web, but as far as I have seen, only in the mp3 format. I believe that a lossy format does this record a great disservice because the sonic richness of these three pieces really needs to be heard across the entire frequency range. I was able to locate it on a torrent site and in flac, so even if the files are much larger, I believe it's worth the extra time it takes to download them.

What to say about these three pieces? They are drone-based with obvious references to the US minimalist scene in the 60s and later around figures like La Monte Young, but to these ears, they never become monotonous. There are subtle changes going on all the time throughout these 70 minutes pieces, but it takes an attentive ear attuned to the nature of slowness to fully discover them. As such, they are meditative and in a certain way buddhist in design and execution. Radigue later got immersed in Mahayana Buddhism and these pieces provide an explanation.

Radigue likens her music metaphorically to the movement of water, to the changes of sound waves whereby the ear filters, selects and emphasizes some areas of hearing or by by looking at shimmering water, always in motion, yet remaining the same.

These are better heard on a good stereo than on an computer or a portable listening device. The acoustic ambience of the room within which these pieces are heard is part of the performance, and you may find that sound generates sound, set off by the vibrations of sound waves.

Brotherhood of Breath live at Siegendorff 1975

This is a one-hour excerpt from a BoB concert in Siegendorff in Austria on 11 July 1975. The final track in this set is unfortunately faded out before the end and I've no idea whether there were more tunes, but I have a hunch there might have been.

The line-up is not entirely certain, but quite possibly similar to the BoB line-up at the Willisau concert the same year. I've added Harry Beckett as he was playing on both 1975 gigs featured on the "Bremen to Bridgwater" cd released by Cuneiform, so there is a likelihood that he is on this gig as well though one cannot be entirely sure (unless one can pick him out from the audio). New to BoB is Bruce Grant on baritone sax, stepping in for John Surman, one might say. He also appeared on the "French" version of BoB on "Yes Please" which we have posted here earlier.

There was no set list given when this was posted on the Dime network, so I've had to reconstruct the list by listening to the tunes and crosschecking with other BoB albums. Interestingly, many of the tunes here were never released in a studio version, might not even have been recorded, but were regulars in the BoB live repertoire. From what I've been able to find out, these are the tunes:

Nice to hear the anthem-like "Ismite is Might", appearing at roughly at the 11-minute mark on the first track here, after a false start of "Mra".
