david murray solo saxophone VOL'S 1and2, FLAC AND LAME

Continuing on with the series of early david murray recordings.
Here is murrays biggest challenge up to that point, 2 lps of solo saxophone made for cecma(another great Italian label).
For me this is the crest of a peak which includes sweet and lovely and interboogieology, and culminates with the great early octet recordings ming and home.

These 2 solo lp’s have been out of circulation since being released together on a now out of print cd in 1990.

I had only ever heard(through a friend) vol -2 which includes a great version of body and soul.
Vol 1 features 2 of murrays best early compositions in intense and very vivid versions ‘sweet and lovely’ and ‘flowers for albert’.

LEE KONITZ- MARTIAL SOLAL DUPLICITY 1977( DOUBLE LP) HORO, FLAC AND LAME

heres a great and now sadly rare and unreissued LEE KONITZ/ MATIAL SOLAL album , which was recorded in italy for the shortlived, now famed horo label.

The horo label ,is probably most remembered these days for a couple of legendary sun ra small group albums, and documents of sam rivers tuba band.
They also recorded many supposedly “mainstream ‘ gems.
I d have to disagree with anyone who thinks of konitz, as a mainstream player.

John tchicai reffered to konitz as the most avantguard sax player of the sixties after Coltrane!!!

This album contains what must be among the most radical deconstructions of standard jazz tunes ever
With konitz and solal pushing into a chromaticism so extreme on some tracks that tonal centers of tunes disappear entirely.
Often the melody is not even stated in its original form at all, and either fractured beyond the point of recognition.
Or completely pulverized after a brief passing statement.

Its easy to characterize this as cool, dry, whatever.
That there are freedoms here is an understatement, the pervasive level of thematic abstraction has its own freefloating momentum.

ARTHUR BLYTHE QUINTET - LIVE IN MONTRÉAL, QB, CANADA JULY 1981

Here's a wonderful concert by the great Arthur Blythe in his prime.

One of my favourite concert albums of all time has always been the Grip/Metamorphosis set on India Navigation from a few years before this concert.

Arthur has been around forever, and has recently (last 10 years) made a spate of great records for diverse labels.

For a time it looked like he was floundering after being picked up by cbs, for whom he made a couple of great records which didn’t sell, and are only now being rediscovered for the gems they are.
Label executives have never been terribly tolerant of artists intentions, unless they can make money.
So it seemed to a lot of Arthurs fans for a time that he was being manicured , and given a commercial makeover that didn’t suit him at which a lot of his virtues and integrity were sacrificed, to recoup the big advances and initial cost of that manicure.

But Arthur's back in full force,
And heres a potent souvenir from the glory days of that great period from the mid seventies to the early eighties.

Elvin Jones - Live at The Lighthouse 1972

Elvin Jones is not often posted on blogs. He may not have had the artistry of Sunny Murray or Max Roach, but he was one of the greatest rhythmic drummers of all time. Famous of course for his 6 year stint with Coltrane, after which he was replaced by Rashied Ali, Elvin embarked on a career as leader of his own bands. I had the good fortune to catch a live concert in London, slightly earlier than this recording, and with Joe Farrell instead of Liebman.

This recording was released as a double LP by Blue Note. For some unexplained reason they never re-released it on CD. I have seen reference to a Japanese import, but I've never seen it. The highlight of the set, for me, is the opening tune "Fancy Free" which has some fantastic soloing from Liebman on soprano and Grossman on tenor.

Rashied Ali Quartet - New Directions In Modern Music 1971

Ali, who replaced Elvin Jones in John Coltrane's band, formed this quartet after Coltrane's death. On this session Fred Simmons was standing in for the regular pianist, Don Pullen. The style of musically carried on from where Coltrane left off - high energy stuff, with lots of drumming and long solos.

DAVID MURRAY- LOW CLASS CONSPIRACY 1976 (ADELPHI LP 5002) FLAC and LAME

HERES A CONTINUATION of posts of OOP early david murray, this is a great one murray is phenomenal on this considering he was barely out of his teens.

and fred hopkins and phillip wilson, are simply unique one of the best rythm sections around at the time in this very free setting.

this features the definative version of deweys circle,a tune murray apparently still occasionally plays.

i disagree strongly that the tunes are unmemorable.

This LP contains tenor saxophonist David Murray's first full-length album as a leader. At 21, Murray already had remarkable technique and these explorations with bassist Fred Hopkins and drumer Phillip Wilson are quite adventurous. The opening "Extremininity" is an intense unaccompanied tenor feature, Hopkins takes "Dedication to Jimmy Garrison" as his showcase and the other three pieces are full of interplay by the full trio. None of the compositions themselves are that memorable and some listeners may find Murray's screams and screeches (which he would modify a bit in later years) to be a bit too emotional, but this was a strong first effort.

HERE'S, a stunning live album by one of the all time
great free jazz groups, this the first album of theirs i ever bought, and Ive loved the collective sound of this group ever since.


threadgill has now like anthony braxton transcended the idiom, and there are plenty of pointers to this (rampantly eclectic )future direction throughout this GLORIOUS slab .

this bands palette was as broad as it was subtle, almost everything can happen,a truly rich and rewarding listening experience.

i never tire of listening to this, one could spend a lifetime and find continual renewal.

who knows why the aeco became more acclaimed than AIR or the Revolutionary ensemble for me along with Leo smith and anthony braxton's mammoth oeuvre.
the most joyous and satisfying listening experiences Ive ever had, contemporary free jazz is hugely mannered by comparison.

fred hopkins and steve mccall -are sadly no longer with us.








this is a very clean vinyl rip, and shame on bmg or whomever owns novus for not deeming air's albums worthy of full hansomely packaged reissue.

Max (and all performers) is in fine form, though for me, the highlight of the concert is the rendition of "In a Sentimental Mood", which has some great horn-playing and a superb solo bass section, with Roach playing in a very sensitive and controlled manner.

Charles Lloyd Quartet - Live Karlsruhe, Germany 1994 (FM recording)

I've heard it said that Charles Lloyd's later recordings on ECM lack the excitement and creativity of his earlier work. This certainly can't be said of this recording, a live concert in Germany 1994. This is an FM recording, so sound quality is excellent. Many thanks to "billjen" for seeding.

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath - Live Berlin 1971

This recording has done the rounds several times on the net, so some of you will have it. For those who haven't I recommend you grab it - it's a gem.

I guess you all know the origin of B of B, so I'll spare you the story. I don't know the origin of the recording, the sound's far too good for a 70s audience bootleg, so I guess that it's a radio broadcast. Oddly enough, though it's supposed to have been recorded in Berlin, the announcer of the concert is (or sounds) English, and the band seem to be appearing between other acts.

The recording is ripped at 192 kbps (very good quality), with 2 single tracks of about 30 mins each.

the music is inventive and has an energy that studio recordings in lesters case seldom captured.

massimo urbani is a real revelation here, i have heard him on perhaps one or two things before, but this is somethin' ese.

the rythym sections nothing special , though they are more than merely meritricious.

John Tchicai - Cadentia Nova Danica (1968)

After a number of succesful years during the early 60s in New York, where he recorded with, among others, Coltrane and Shepp, Tchicai returned to his native Denmark and formed the group Cadentia Nova Danica. This band made two recordings, of which this was the first. The band was enlarged considerably for the second, Afrodisiaca.

The line up (see back cover in scans) was mainly comprised of Danish musicians, none of whom, to my knowledge, subsequently became known outside Scandinavia (at least in the jazz field, although I gather the second altoist, Vogel, became well-known in progressive rock). The music on the recording, which was done live in a hall in Aarhus, Denmark, has a strong Scandinavian feel to it (not surprisingly). Tchicai plays some nice solos, but it is the ensemble that makes this a terrific recording.

David Murray and Sunny Murray Quintet - Live 1975

This recording comes by way of a bit torrent (thanks to original seeder), originating from an FM recording WXPN FM Philadelphia Pa Aug 21 1975. I think this was one of only two sessions that this particular line-up gigged together, though of course the two Murrays have played together many times. Both are in fine form in this set, with David sounding sometimes like Ayler, sometimes like Sonny Rollins, sometimes like Trane. There is much sensitivity in the tracks as well as some good hard blowing. I particularly like the vibes work of Khan Jamal.

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Live at Fabrik, Hamburg, Germany 1987 (FM recording)

I picked this up off the net some time ago. It originates from a German radio broadcast. I'm not an expert on AEOC's work, but I've never heard them play Ayler's Ghosts before. I'd be interested if any afficionados out there can add titles to the unknowns. They're full of the usual gongs, bells, sirens, whistles etc that typifies AEOC's work. There's some fiery blowing on Ghosts, but I'm not sure whether it's from Jarman or Mitchell (or a combination).

Daniel has perhaps never had the recognition he deserves. He has recorded with the likes of Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Sam Rivers, Billy Bang and Henry Threadgill, but has made only 3 recordings under his own name (one of these, "Tapestry" was uploaded by James on his blog Nothing Is http://ajbenjamin2beta.blogspot.com/ and I see is still available - you'll have to search the blog to find it).

Joseph Bowie, whilst perhaps not having the great talent of his older brother, Lester, nevertheless is a good partner for Daniel. Again, several recordings from the 70s, featuring Bowie, can be found on the Nothing Is blog. I understand that nowadays he is involved more in funk bands, such as Defunkt, rather than with free jazz.


I know very little about the Japanese rhythm section, other than that Nakamura went on to play with John Zorn.

i havent heard a great deal of stevens in this much more jazz orientated context, the few i have heard have been wonderful.

this one is particularly good, a vinyl in stunningly good sound , of kinablus lovingly preserved vinyl.

Kinablu says” It's a hybrid of sorts which really works, imho. Particularly enjoyed the interplay of Peter King and Gordon Beck. Really a bit of a showcase for King on this date. And proves that John Stevens did a whole more than the pure improv of SME (which I find myself appreciating as much, if not more).

Archie Shepp - Pitchin' Can (1969)

This recording was released on the America label (which I understand never paid it's artists). It consists of just 2 tracks, the first "Uhuru (Dawn of Freedom" is the longest of the two and continues across both sides of the LP. This track has never been released on any other recording. The second, "Pitchin' Can" which is also the title of this album, has also been released on a CD Black Gipsy, but which I don't think is available.

Uhuru, particularly, is high energy stuff of the type Shepp was playing at the end of the 60s: 3 drummers, including the wonderfully named Ostaine Blue Warner, providing a back drop for Shepp' s searing tenor. There's also some nice work from Clifford Thornton, Lester Bowie
and Alan Shorter.

John Stevens Freebop - Live at Bracknell Jazz Festival July 3rd 1982 (FM Recording)

This is a rare example of the group led by the late great drummer John Stevens, called "Freebop". It was recorded by the BBC at the Bracknell (Berks, UK) Jazz Festival July 1982 and subsequently broadcast on FM radio. This posting comes from a bit torrent upped by "6135terry", my thanks to him. Of particular interest to me about this music, is the presence of altoist Pete King, who is a beebopper, not known for his excursions into this territory. The other band members are stalwarts of the UK free jazz scene (sadly though, Paul Rutheford passed away very recently, Stevens died in 1994).

There are only 25 minutes on this broadcast, the full concert was subsequently released on vinyl on the Affinity label (AFF101), from which the above image is obtained. This record is long OOP, if anyone has it I'd love to know as I think it was the only recording of this band. Stevens of course recorded as leader of many other bands, perhaps most notably SME. Many of the SME recordings are available on the EMANEM label.

New York Art Quartet - Mohawk (1965)

I think this may have been posted before on a blog, but not for some time, so I guess some people don't have it. It was a short-lived quartet, which produced only two recordings to my knowledge, of which this is the second. The quartet, led by alto saxophonist John Tchicai, have a very distinctive sound, never reproduced by any other ensemble. The uniqueness of the sound comes from the collective interpretations of the tunes, rather from any long solos.

It is also interesting to note that all four members of the quartet are still alive and peforming (to my knowledge).

stanley crouch, free jazz drummerman ?

Here’s a great one , from a very adventurous youthful david murray, this was a seasoned band, and it contains some of murrays most "out" playing ever, I have to confess im a huge fan of murrays , and this period from roughly 75- 82 produced some of the best so called “free jazz” tenor in the history of the music, this is well on par and in my view better than what people like gayle, and david s ware are now doing, somewhat different too, although theres no doubting albert aylers influence here(flowers for albert is a dedication to ayler)
1960’s sonny Rollins is also a huge influence.
With butch morris , fred Hopkins, and the great don pullen on board, you pretty much get the idea in advance that its going to burn red hot.
A lot of free jazz snobs who are suspicious of virtuosity and prefer a noisy staccato attack , and full on multi phonic assault, view murray as a sellout, I love (very selectively his later stuff too) and if possible I recommend to their attentions the very moving tribute to don pullen on diw called ‘the long goodbye’.

The real surprise for younger people here must surely be Stanley crouches’s presence as drummer with this band, crouch is now best known as a reactionary critic who dismisses cecil taylor as not being in the black music tradition at all, and who through his enormous power over the likes of protégés like wynton marsallis has spread his neo con dogma,throughout all mediums including television and film the most notorious example being his presence as eminence grise behind the scenes of ken burns series about jazz.

Crouch was once a stalwart of the loft scene, who though no where near as inventive and authoritative as milford graves , Andrew cyrille and sunny murray , or phillip Wilson(who also drummed with this group), none the less does surpassingly well.
This was originally released as 2 separate albums vol1 “penthouse jazz’ and vol2 “holy siege on intrigue”
This rip though was taken from the semi bootleg cd released in 1990 on the westwind label which is now out of print.

Zappatistas - Live at Frankfurt Jazz Festival Oct 2003 (FM Recording)

Zappatistas is a Frank Zappa tribute band, composed of a group of British jazz musicians led by guitarist John Etheridge, who is perhaps best known for his work with Soft Machine in the 1970s. Since then, he's played with classicist violinist Nigel Kennedy, and other former Soft Machine stalwarts such as Elton Dean and John Marshall, and with Stephane Grappelli. I don't know too much about the other band members, with the exception of Annie Whitehead, who runs her own band and is considered as Britain's finest female trombone players (though I must admit I couldn't name any others).

I'm no particular fan of Frank Zappa, but I saw the Zappatistas live a couple of years ago at a local club and I thought they were tremendous. Unfortunately, they have made only one recording, which I think is no longer available. Also, their gigs are few and far between, as I expect the musicians don't want to become typecast into a tribute repetoire. I obtained this recording from a bit torrent, originating from a German FM broadcast. It was an old torrent file, only 2 seeds so it took over a week to download it, but well worth it as this is a rare example of the band's recorded work.

Considering that Zappa was thought to live much of his life under a drug-induced depression, much of his music is "jolly". There are some really good tunes in this work.

Some of the tracks finish a bit abruptly - tracks 6,7, and 8 are a medley which have been split up a little inappropriately, though hopefully this will not spoil your enjoyment too much.

heres an album i like by a quartet which was an active working unit for some years.
jimmy lyons of course was a mainstay of cecil taylor's units for 25 or so years.
and im sure that fans who have the ayler box ,are already familiar with the high level of creative empathy produced by this group.

For one of his very infrequent recordings outside of the realm of Cecil Taylor, altoist Jimmy Lyons teams up with the talented jazz bassoonist Karen Borca, bassist Jay Oliver and drummer Paul Murphy for lengthy and rather adventurous versions of "Theme" and "Riffs #1/II" plus the brief "Riffs #1/I" which serves as a prelude to the longer "Riffs." It is always intriguing to hear Lyons stretching out without a piano and this set helped make listeners aware of Borca's brilliant playing on the rarely utilized bassoon.

its hard to go wrong with jimmy lyons, unfortunately on this the recording balance is far from perfect, the sound quality is at times muddy , though its certainly better than that achieved on the mamoth 3 lp set push- pull which i regret having sold because of the poor sound quality.
if anyone has that please post it either here or elsewhere.

this wont dissapoint any lyons fans, despite its technical shortcomings.

Most of these players went onto well-documented careers, but there are two enigmatic characters among them:-Bernie Living, who has a style similar to Kaoru Abe, and George Khan, who, to me, has more than a passing resemblence to Albert Ayler. I think both of these guys became lost to rock - Living was last heard of in a Manfred Mann band, and Khan in a jazz rock group called Sold Gold Cadillac. I can find no trace of either of them after the early 70s. What a waste of talent !

anyone familiar with the ,wonderful fmp disc , touch the earth break the shells, will already have an informed view of the stunning empathy between kowald ,smith, and sommer.

well this concert adds the highly individual approach to the vibraphone of bobby naughton a neglected figure whos contributions to classic leo smith, anthony braxton, and roscoe mitchell albums, to some extent shaped my appreciation of the instrument's possibilities as something other than a merely pianistic approach, ah la say milt jackson.

all i can say about this is that, its a major statement by masters who's names should be in every lover of improvised music's lexicon, this is as great an example of aacm , post 60's free intergrating with euro free improv as one could hope to find, anyone interested in either should on no account overlook this superlative gem.

dickerson deserves to be much better known than he is, having recorded the acknowledged masterpiece "to my queen" in 1963

with andrew hill and andrew cyrille ,he went on to make lots of great records.

the first dickerson album i ever heard was the wonderful trio "life rays" on soul note, again with longstanding collaborators lisle atkinson on bass and master percussionist andrew cyrille on drums.

i thought i did'nt like jazz vibraphone at all until i heard walt's message, and a little later bobby naughton's essential contributions to leo smith's 'go in numbers, he budding of a rose and spirit catcher'.

i had heard gary burton, and later bobby hutcherson and didn't really appreciate them at the time.

Walter Roland Dickerson(born April 16, 1928 or 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a jazz vibraphone player most associated with post-bop.
He graduated from Morgan State University in 1953 and after two years in the Army he settled in California. There he started to gain attention leading a band with Andrew Hill and Andrew Cyrille, but it was his later time in New York City that earned him full notice. In 1962 Downbeat named him the best new artist. In NYC he also worked with John Coltrane and Sun Ra acted as his sideman. From 1965 to 1975 he took a break from jazz, but later he worked again with Andrew Hill and Sun Ra.

there is no dickerson website, fan site and otherwise precious little about him at all.

the wikipedia bio falls short, and even the post bop tag seems an easy catch all.

dickerson is unique and has a very original style, its percussive , luminous and conceptually very abstract.

this is a wonderful concert, the sound quality is superb for the day, (almost soundboard quality).

buy walt dickerson discs, there are now quite a few available on soulnote/blacksaint, prestige/ojc, and steeplechase.

i'd especially recommend, gemini, peace, and life rays.
